Description: Where Cafe Saudade now stands, there used to be housed the historical Queijadas da Mathilde cheesecake factory from 1888 to 1974.These queijadas de Sintra (cheesecakes) were a favorite of King Ferdinand II (who restored the Pena Palace). During the 3rd quarter of the 19th century, the king gave the factory founder a stamp marked Mathilde, to brand the cheesecakes bound for the royal family. The Cafe Saudade was restored and preserved over a year long renovation in 2008 and opened in the summer of 2009. Recycled and regional materials and resources were used to create an environment that authentic. We pride ourselves for this and and for the fact that our team offers the best service they can.The spaces of the old cheesecake factory are today a cultural reference in Sintra's recent historical background. Its preservation allows us a glimpse into the ancient manufacturing process of the typical queijada de Sintra.Wander through the "Saudade Labyrinth" and fall in love with Sintra. Visit our Art Gallery and explore the various rooms with pieces of furniture that we restored with love and care, and in which we have handcrafts for sale. We host literary gatherings, jazz and fado concerts and other cultural activities.

We had a perfect lunch for two on a rainy day in Sintra. Very close to the train station, so a perfect end to the day. Excellent hot vegetable and fish soups and peasant chicken panini. The staff spoke wonderful English. Would definitely return if in Sintra again.

Dear Laura,

We're so glad that you enjoyed your lunch in Café Saudade! Sadly, rain is more common in Sintra than in many other parts of Portugal, but we hope that we managed to brighten your day - same as your review brightened ours.

Happy travels,

Café Saudade

We went here off a Lonely Planet recommendation. We had a chocolate scone, a quejida, a panini, and 2 coffees. The inner part of the scone where there was chocolate and cream was excellent. Unfortunately the rest of the scone was a bit dry (I recommend ordering jam with the scone). The quejida was ok, but a bit over-hyped (pretty much a pastel de nata with cinnamon). The panin was excellent - very fresh and tasty. My mom had a latte, which was good, but the sweet coffee (with sweetened condensed milk) that I had was amazing! It is very sweet (so if you don't like dessert / sweet coffee, not for you) - I tried similar coffees in Lisbon, but never found one quite as good as here. They have a couple of small tables outside.

Dear Salsera713,

Thank you so much for taking the time to review us on Tripadvisor!
We Portuguese pride ourselves in our coffee blends and roasts, so we're glad that you appreciate the coffee drinks you tried at Café Saudade.
We'll see if there is anything we can do to improve the texture of the scones, so that if you visit us again in the future they will be absolutely perfect.

Hope to see you again in the near future!

Best,
Café Saudade

Well, this place is #1 for a reason. The ambiance was amazing for one thing. It was artsy, but not over the top. We had the soup of the day and paninis on traditional bread, yum! The best part was the white chocolate and red berry cake. Make this a memorable stop in a storybook town. It's what I grew up imagining Europe to be like.

I kept coming back for more tea and huge portions of cake! Saudade became my go to place for meals during my stay in Sintra. I'm vegetarian, and could be guaranteed something good to eat every time I visited. The place is comfortable, beautifully decorated and has free wifi. The staff were welcoming, informative, always happy to help. I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonably priced everything was. Oh but the cakes! Such great cakes! Go for the cakes! A wonderful place, you really should visit.

Hi Paula!
We're so glad that you enjoyed your visit to Café Saudade. We've always kept in mind that the vegetarian offer can be somewhat lacking in Portugal, so we try to cater to this regime.

We hope you can visit us again some time soon.
Happy travels,
Café Saudade

Café Saudade is...well...it's perfect. We enjoyed five meals there in the three days we spent in Sintra.

It is a friendly place with a wonderful menu that shows that the café’s owners, Luís and Mary Pereira, know what they are doing. Traditional Portuguese espresso, pastries and scones. Sandwiches on bolo do caco from Madeira. Gorreana tea from the Azores. Queijada like King Ferdinand II (the lover of cheesecake who built the whimsical Pena Palace) used to order from the faithfully restored building in which the café now operates.

We plan to go back. However, we are pessoas idosas and know that we probably will not. In the interim, we are left with saudade—a word that is hard to define. It is Portuguese for a very particular type of longing that seems to embrace, in one word, all of the sentiments of missing special friends and places.
