Owner description: The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

This old castle is amazing. Although much of it has been demolished, you can still walk along/on top of the palace walls and be amazed that such a large and imposing castle was built without any modern machinery. It is alot of steps to the top but it is worth the effort.

Don't set aside a whole day for this, because you'll need a max of a couple hours, but you can buy a combo ticket for this and the Palacio de Pena for, I think it was 17 Euro's, so I recommend doing the Palace first, then this on the way down. The entrance to both are from the same parking lot. Obviously there's a lot of stair climbing involved if you want to go to the top, but I highly recommend doing it! The view from the top is absolutely stunning! You can see for miles! The view of the castle is also pretty great. High recommend, but be careful bringing kids. Wouldn't be too tough to fall off.

This was one of my favourite attractions in Portugal. Loved the steep walk to the top and were rewarded with amazing views. The castle itself is magical and you can almost imagine what it must have been like when it was inhabited.

This place is just amazing, so high up, you can climb up the battlements and the views across the country side are stunning, 360 degrees around. You can also see some of the old excavations they have done showing burial areas and storage in the castle grounds. I'd totally recommend this if gou are in Sintra!

Definitely worth a visit if you are going to Sintra but be prepared for a lot of walking. It is a large castle and from the walls and towers you get amazing views for miles around. When you go, make sure to take a packed lunch with plenty to drink as prices on site are pretty high, especially for drinks.
You can buy a joint ticket for Pena palace and save some money. Also buy a day bus pass for 10 euros to get you around.
