Owner description: The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

After Palace de Pena we took a short walk down the hill to the Moorish Castle. The picture on the pamphlet we had with us was mysterious and mb even scary but that might depend on the weather. It's totally different from de Pena which i see as a good thing. If you have a good imagination visiting it is almost like visiting The Great Wall of China ;) It was also the only place that provided us with map of Sintra.
After about an hour we decided to give it a try and visit one more place: Quinta da Regaleira.

MUST DO. It's historical so I can't comment much, it would be disrespectful. Please take your time to walk along the walls.

Top tips: 1. Get get quite hot and tiring in the hottest hours in summer, the walk is practically all on the sun. Be safe.

Great views, stunning engineering and design - and good to walk around, assuming you have a head for heights!

The development work appears to be being done in a sympathetic way, too.

Loved this. Despite the heat wave and complaining kids, we all enjoyed Moors Castle. Be careful as there is nothing that separates you from the castle and falling. One of our highlights in our trip. Worth visiting!

Between the Pena Palace and the Moorish Castle one will get their day's exercise, both require plenty of walking and the Castle requires climbing- step after step after step. But, the views are worth every step. The one precautionary word would be the steps to the high elevations of the Castle are open air and have no guardrails on the inside, thus if you are fearful of heights you may not make the assent to the highest points. I enjoyed it, my wife went only part of the way for the aforementioned reason, and I was done after achieving the highest tower and did not attempt the Castle keep. An enjoyable outing following the Pena Palace and Gardens.
