Owner description: The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

At first I didn't want to climb it and thought it's just another medieval castle with lots of ruins. Luckily, that was totally not the case!

The views from the castle are stunning! And so is the castle itself. The walk on the walls is a must to feel all the ancient magic of the place. Also the area around the castle is really marvelous and picturesque and it's a great ares to walk around.

Totally recommended!
You can save a bit if you buy a combine ticket for Moor's Castle and Pena Palace together.

Interesting castle. Really old, and some construction and renovations were taking place when we visited. The view of mountains nearby was not very special, perhaps it's because it's still early spring. But you can see the whole view of nearby towns.

If history and spectacular scenery is your thing and you happen to be visiting Lisbon Portugal, then Sintra is a must!! Sintra is a short train ride from Lisbon and situated in the mountains north of the city. Upon exiting the train, a bus will take you up to: (1) the National Palace, (2) the magical, fairy-tale Pena Palace perched on a mountain peak, and (3) the Castelo dos Mouros [Castle of the Moors] built in the 8th-9th centuries. Much of the castle appears to have crumbled over the centuries but the ramparts are like a miniature Great Wall of China. Walk the ramparts that follow the natural contours of the land if you're physically able and have no fear of heights. But watch your step and use the ancient walls to brace yourself against wind gusts and uneven foot paths. A camera is a must as the views are spectacular, and the history amazing. You'll find restaurants and gift shops in town.

This is truly a must-do! The view that you get from here is stunning! It's a bit exhausting to get there, but It is really worth it. You will have a great view from Sintra and the outskirts. Bear in mind that buying Pena Palace + Castelo dos Mouros tickets together is cheaper.

It was a bit of a hike up and down the hills but the views were amazing. Could have done with more water or food stations though. We ran out of water and didn't find another place until we were at the entrance again. It was the best ice cream and water money could buy at that stage. It's a tough life being a Moor but worth it.
