Owner description: The Moorish Castle is a military fortification that bears witness to the Islamic presence in the region, and was probably constructed between the eighth and ninth centuries and later expanded after the Reconquista. Overlooking the town of Sintra, it served as a watchtower, guaranteeing the protection of Lisbon and its surroundings.

“Soaring views”
Reviewed March 2, 2013

The Castelo dos Mouros is undergoing major renovations so not everything is accessible. Be sure to wear good shoes since the cobblestone paths are somewhat uneven and you have to climb up and down a lot of stairs to see what is there. The site provides views of the city and valley below (including Quinta da Regaleira) and gives a little slice of Portugal's history. This is not a site for people who have limited mobility, but if you can make the walk you will surely enjoy it.

“A great vire and a huge castle”
Reviewed February 25, 2013 via mobile

Situated on a hill above Sintra, the castle is under restoration. It is obvious that they have big plans with it. You get there by bus. It is inexpensive. About 3€. You can walk all around the castle's walls. The view from the walls and the highest tower is amazing. You can see the Atlantic ocean and Lisbon. It's amazing!

“Gives you a feel for the role of the Moors in Portugal”
Reviewed February 19, 2013

We visited the Castle on our way to the National Palace of Pena. We arrived here fairly early in the morning so we were able to view the area without too many other tourists. It was very windy when we were climbing the walls, but the view was worth the effort.

“Too far to walk up the steep hill.”
Reviewed February 18, 2013

It was too far for us to walk up the steep hill,so we enjoyed the view further down.
Entry fees in Portugal seem rather pricey and if there is a family of you it soon ratchets up the costs.
We saw the crenellated battlements which looked similar to the Castel San Jorg in Lisbon as you can get a bit of castle and museum fatigue if you see too many of them in a single day.

“Great castle, great views”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

We visited for a day in July. The castle itself is not much more than a long wall with some towers on the edge of a cliff, but its views are spectacular and you are amazed at how people managed to build it so long ago. Be careful if you are visiting with children since the are many high steps, small walls and no fence nor rail.
