“Traveling to Sintra with a baby, this is a must”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

My husband and I were on vacation with our 18 month old daughter and decided to take a day trip to Sintra. We were able to catch a train from the main station in Lisbon. Our daughter LOVED the train ride to Sintra, and its only about 40 minutes from Lisbon. Sintra itself is a gorgeous little town. It is set in the hills with ocean views and beautiful sunlight. We were able to easily and quickly catch the bus to Pena Palace. One note on the bus ride - they try to get as many people as possible onto the buses, so just be ready to be crammed in there for a while. The bus ride itself is fairly short though, maybe 15 minutes. When we arrived at Pena Palace, it became clear that our stroller would not fit on the trollies that transport people to the palace itself which is at the top of a steep hill. So, we decided to walk up there (no small feat with a 40 pound stroller/baby package and a very vertical incline) but the trees and the gardens are so beautiful that it didn't matter. The walk itself took 15 minutes or so, not bad at all. Pena Palace is breathtaking, and the views are simply incredible. Being able to see right out to the ocean, and being surrounded by this incredible palace (reminiscent of Park Guell) was not only wonderful for us, but our little one loved it too. There was plenty of room for her to run around the palace grounds. We also enjoyed a fantastic and cost-effective buffet lunch at the restaurant on-site. They had a high chair for our daughter (big plus) and the food was great. One thing I would change about our visit was the interior tour. Because the palace is small in scale, the line to walk through the interior is single-file and so, I would not recommend taking a baby or small child on it as you cannot easily get past people if your little person loses patience with seeing antique beds and mirrors. :) Suggestion - one person stays outside with the little one while the other one takes the 15 minute tour. Other than that, I would highly recommend this activity for families visiting Sintra.

“Disney, take a lesson.”
Reviewed July 24, 2013

Visiting Sintra for the palaces is like visiting Neuschwanstein in Bavaria: some fantasy creations and some actual older palace/fortresses, but all fun to visit. Yes, Disney copied the Bavarian version, but this Portuguese version is every bit as spectacular. This is truly a "castle in the sky", with dizzying views all around. Colorful and interesting. The rooms are surprisingly small, though. Take kids to this one, but make sure you take the buses, trams, unless you are prepared for a steep hike!

“Beautiful surrounding to fantasy castles”

Gorgeous and extensive gardens, more like a forest. Water features, lovely hiking. Do be aware that this is quite steep! The viewpoints are spectacular. Don't miss the fantasy palace.

“Worth the long road!”

If you liked the Park Guell in Barcelona, you'll also love the Palacio de Pena in Sintra.
It's an unusual building, which appears as if made out assembling different pieces of different times and styles.
The view and colours from its towers and terrasses are simply amazing.

“2nd visit to Pena”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

25 years ago I did the Palace interior tour - fascinating old furniture and furnishings. This time round, the sun beckoned outside so it was, walk to the soldier statue, then the cross overlooking Estoril, where we sat with swallowtail butterflies dancing around us, then back via the carp lakes. Despite the hurricane bringing down many trees last winter, the park is open and workers are doing a great job in clearing massive, ancient fallen trees out of the way.
