Even the bus trip to reach the palace is worthwhile as the driver manages through windy tight roads. The palace stands tall on the mountain with such an imposing nature and the ability to walk through many of the areas and enjoy an understanding of the summer palace of the royal family is excellent. Great views and good access, only issue is queues and ticketing is slow. To catch the bus from the train station is a 5 euro return trip.

Such a beautiful place. We wished we had spent more time here. It was so lovely to walk around the grounds, and have a good look around the palace. I wouldn't bother going inside because I find the outside of the palace the real highlight

A very pleasant morning can be spent here - just a short trip outside of Sintra. There is plenty to see and lots of photo opportunities.

The Palace of Pena was the reason we visited Sintra, but it was our least favorite thing we saw. It's a cool looking palace, but the best views of it are from afar. We walked around the grounds for awhile, but there wasn't that much to see. There is plenty of parking outside of the palace, it isn't necessary to walk all the way up the hill even though you may see a lot of people doing that.

Rather than taking the bus up to the palace, the gardens really are worth a visit. My favorite parts were the elaborate duck houses - created in islands in the lakes. Best way to visit them is to start at the Entrance of the Lakes, go through the Valley of the Lakes, see the other gardens that you're interested in, then visit the palace, exit through the main entrance and see the Moorish Castle. It's then an easy walk to get back to the Entrance of the Lakes.

Make sure to pick up a map when you purchase tickets!
