“Peaceful stay, wonderful gardens”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2011

This is a beautiful B&B. Old house with a only a few rooms. Bright and clean, gorgeous breakfast room with an excellent continental style breakfast. Really peaceful and lovely gardens and a great view from the entrance porch. We travelled with a baby and Maria was wonderful and accommodating in every way. The B&B is a bit of a walk from the "old" part of Sintra, but a great location relative to the train station, as well as restaurants and coffee. The owner does have a large and playful dog. Very nice, but big and likes attention, just to be aware.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2010

Stayed here for 2 nights in June 2010.

Location: excellent, less than a 10 minute walk from the train station. About 10 minutes to walk into the main area with shops/restaurants. Well within walking distance of all major sights (Moorish castle, Pena palace, Quinta de Regaleira, etc.). It’s in a residential area.

Rooms/amenities: There are just a handful of rooms in this B&B. The rooms and bathrooms have been very nicely renovated by the owner, you can see pictures on the B&B facebook page. We were in the white room. The room is more basic that what we normally stay in, but still lovely. Couple things to note: there isn’t a wardrobe, so you need to put your clothes on a stand-up hanger that is provided. The bathroom has a tub and a hand-held showerhead (cannot be mounted anywhere) and no shower curtain, so a little tricky to shower and you’ll definitely get the room wet. The room itself is a little small with suitcases. We slept well during our stay, the foam mattress was comfortable, and the room doesn’t get flooded with light which is nice. One odd thing, our room was really humid, so our sheets and clothes were damp – I should’ve mentioned this to the owner, not sure if it was the weather, but maybe a de-humidifier would help. The second night was a little less damp, but when I unpacked my clothes at the next hotel they were completely wrinkled from having been packed damp.

Overall: The owner, Maria Jose, was the crown jewel of our stay. She was so hospitable, and kind, and we really enjoyed our conversations with her. The breakfast spread she provided was by far the best on the trip (home-made crepes with strawberries, fresh bread and coldcuts, freshly squeezed orange juice). The owner does have a dog, so if you’re a little afraid of dogs, something to be aware of, I am which is why I’m noting it. It’s a large friendly dog, but it does like to jump on you if it’s not tied up. You'll likely also find a few dog hairs here and there.

For a shorter stay in Sintra it was perfect, and we would come back to see Maria Jose and have her crepes again! She said she recently started the B&B, so a couple of the practical touches (e.g., mounted showerhead, etc.) might be in place soon. After our stay, we recommended this B&B to a German traveler we ran into in Albufeira who was planning to go to Sintra so hopefully word gets out as my review is the first review on TripAdvisor.

Suggestions for Sintra: definitely check-out the Moorish castle, Pena palace, and Quinta de Regaleira (bring a headlamp or flashlight so you can go through the hidden tunnels/mazes that are not lit). Toy museum was fun if you’re into that kind of thing. Also, if you can go when they hold the town festival, it’s fantastic, and be sure to eat the freshly grilled sardines, and make friends with the locals while eating at the festival, as we did. The place we ate at was Gingao I think (restaurants set-up small spaces at the festival), and we were told by the locals that tried every place and this one was the best). Definitely stay in Sintra for 2 days, in our opinion, a day trip, or one night is too rushed, and there’s so much to see.
