Owner description: The National Palace of Sintra, located in the historic town centre, was inhabited for nearly eight centuries by the Portuguese monarchy and its court. It was much used, particularly during the Middle Ages, as a hunting retreat and as a refuge from outbreaks of disease in the capital, or as a summer resort, thanks to the town's more agreeable climate.

Comparing the sites that you can see in Sintra I recommend to see Pana park and Pena Palace and Moorish castle. Nothing special in the National Palace although that you can visually see a part of Portugal history, Some rooms have beautiful paintings or ceramics on the walls and the top but most of the rooms are decorated with paintings of different painters from the same historical period.

This was the best thing in Sintra. One of the rooms was just incredible and worth paying just to see that. The kitchens were amazing as well with the huge chimneys you can see from the outside.

The palace is rather plain on the outside and beautiful and interesting on the inside. Fabulous tour. Gorgeous history of the city and the country. Art and ceramics everywhere. Stunning ceiling artwork and floors. It began as a fortress and converted to where people lived over time. Quite charming. A MUST see on your day in Sintra.

Compared to the major European palaces or those in the UK, this once great palace is much the worse for wear, and desperately needs large amounts of money spent on it to bring it back to standard. The walls look tired -- their once majestic coverings and gilt work have long gone. Much of the furniture is not original -- and not even Portuguese. In summary, it is worth a visit, but for no more than 1-2 hours.

The National Palace is one of those places you should visit, but doesn't mean its one of the best sites in Sintra.

You can easily get here from the train station by taking one of the sighseeing bus, but we took the 434 bus (to the right of the station) costing 5€ per person and allows you to hop on and off along the loop all day. It was especially useful because this entire town is made of hills and mountains.

At the Palace you can buy a combined ticket to a couple attractions, which seemed work it for us. Walking in, there's displays of how they lived in the 15th century. The best areas were the ornate ceilings in some of the grand halls, and the room with ceramic tiles.

We didn't spend more than one hour here, maybe less and then took a short walk up to Quinta Da Regaleira (10 mins)
