Owner description: The National Palace of Sintra, located in the historic town centre, was inhabited for nearly eight centuries by the Portuguese monarchy and its court. It was much used, particularly during the Middle Ages, as a hunting retreat and as a refuge from outbreaks of disease in the capital, or as a summer resort, thanks to the town's more agreeable climate.

if you visit lisbon then you must go to sintra on the train, 45mins and only4.8 euros return. we had a walk to the beautiful palace and continue walking and you see the most amazing buildings, very beautiful and very ornate. well worth the time and small cost. we loved it.

“Stunning Palace”
Reviewed February 4, 2014

What is wonderful about Portuguese palaces is the lack of that gaudy gilt work everywhere. Instead, they have the most beautiful tile and woodwork. They are amazing! We were here in January and there is something to be said for off season travel - we had the entire place to ourselves on a Sunday. We could linger in all the rooms, really look at the ornate furniture and exquisite tile work. The palace is beyond beautiful.
