Owner description: The National Palace of Sintra, located in the historic town centre, was inhabited for nearly eight centuries by the Portuguese monarchy and its court. It was much used, particularly during the Middle Ages, as a hunting retreat and as a refuge from outbreaks of disease in the capital, or as a summer resort, thanks to the town's more agreeable climate.

“Lovely palace”

Originally a moorish castle with 15th century addition. A one-way walk through the palace, but not a lot of information is provided. Beautiful rooms, courtyard, and grounds. The kitchen with the huge chimneys is particularly interesting.

“For history lovers”

The National Palace of Sintra is of course the bold Must Do of every visit in the area. Walking inside the place you see especially quite a number of old furniture and interesting ceiling decorations. When this is what you are looking for - you should visit the palace. If you are for paintings or searching inspiration for architectural solutions you would be rather disappointed. We were not really impressed.

wow, go through every room and enjoy each room for itself but...all of a sudden you go through small arches which are decorated with scuplted twisted designs and then wow! the room..sala dos brasoes decorated with azulejos. breathtaking and then the kitchen with the high chimneys. these chimneys one sees on the outside like two towers. definately go through it.

“Another breathtaking palace in Sintra”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2013

Just as with the Palace of Pena , touring this is worth the time and money. Beautiful architecture, great history and unbelievable views. FYI: We were misled to believe that there were free entrance days & times, but that is only the case for local residents (which is why local residents give out this misinformation to tourists).

You cannot visit Sintra without going round this palace. Go early morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds and enjoy the light
