Review of Obidos Village

I've wanted to see the Óbidos castle for a long time, it's walls are breathtaking... The whole village is surrounded by the 14th century walls that you can climb to and take a stroll on them and surround the city.
We came here from Porto for 30€ return ticket with the Rede Expressos bus line to Caldas da Rainha and from there with Rodovaria do Tejo bus line 15 minutes to Óbidos.

We spent 30 euros in bus fare to travel from Lisbon to this very tiny town with little to offer except a few cafes, the usual tourist junk, some chocolate purveyors, and several winding cobblestone streets. The castle is now a hotel and the interior was restricted to hotel guests. I have found that when TripAdvisor contributors use the word "quaint," it generally indicates the area is devoid of significant natural charm and therefore the locals have manufactured an economy based on convincing undiscerning tourists that there exists some sort of mystery, mystique, or special native product or culinary delicacy. In the case of Obidos, chocolate apparently is the specialty product. They promote an annual chocolate fair in March, although I cannot locate any history of the town being a center of chocolate production. All considering, I would not recommend Obidos unless you are traveling by auto and have no other planed agenda for the day.

I fell in love with this place. I'm so glad we made a decision to visit . The winding streets and beautiful colors surrounded by the wall were just gorgeous. All the shop owners seemed geniunely happy to have us visit and again I couldn't stop snapping photos. There is even an aquaduct attached to the other side. Make it a point if you are anywhere near !

Situated at the foot of a fortified structure, the village of Obidos shows in an original manner the passing of time over it. Built on a height this citadel invites you to discover it. Narrow streets, beautiful passages, the presence of an important visiting sites, cosy little houses "hugged" by amazing Bougainvillea bushes or trees (!!!), wonderful architecture (Moorish, Portuguese, Manuelin) combined with the specific traditional ceramic technique (Azulejos) are just few reasons for a visit here. For sure the stop will surprise you

That small town will attract you with natural sightseeng, narrow streets, nice local shops and cute houses within a medieval castle and walls. Worth to change your route; besides it's not far from Lisbon (not more than 80 kms. from airport).
