“huge bedroom and matching bath”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

very happy this was our Obidos stay - upon arrival, we were shown directly to our room, given a map of Obidos and some history on the building. Room 5 is very spacious corner room with huge ensuite bath with amazing water pressure and lots of hot water. Males guests: the toilet seat didn't stay propped up, the ladies will be happy for this LOL. Huge high ceilings, no problems getting WIFI reception in this room. I was a bit concerned this being a corner (thus windows in both bedroom and bathroom for plentiful daylight) it would be noisy at night but dead quiet. Huge great room with equal sized fireplace, looks like it could easily swallow an entire cow. Breakfast more than adequate. We only stayed here overnight, and did not explore the hotel entirely. I could imagine snuggling up to the bar fireplace in a rainly cool spring night with glass of red wine...I would stay here again. Only reason I did not give this an excellent was the dining/breakfast room was a bit depressing completely enclosed with no view outside or natural lighting. A small thing but I love to be greeted by morning sun.

Room Tip: Room 5 is large corner room in older part of convent - hugely atmospheric with sympathetic furnishin...

We were planning a single night stay here before proceeding to Fatima but found the setting and the hostess so wonderful that we decided to extend our stay by a day and drive to Fatima and return for the night instead. We had booked for a three bedded room and a two bedded room for the 5 of us adults. The surprising thing was that the three bedded had two separate full bathrooms!!!. I have never had something like this in all my years of travelling. The breakfast was sumptuous and very nice. The location was superb just outside the walled town of Obidos. We had to just walk a couple of steps to enter the walled city.

Everything was wonderful at this hotel, it was the highlight of my trip to Portugal. The front desk staff, Joaquin, Natalia, Alda were incredibly warm and friendly. My bathroom was spacious and well equipped and shower worked great. I loved everything about the hotel and look forward to returning!

Room Tip: Room #5 has a really nice bathroom

This is a nice traditional convent hotel with lots of modern touches large log fire in bar area but there no restaurant open when we visited and wifi does not work in the bed rooms but good in bar area. The breakfast was fresh and a good selection our bedroom was nice with newly refurbished bathroom,
But the reason i marked this hotel down was we had ants entering our room from the garden the staff tried to deal with this while we were at dinner but to no avail !!!! We had also booked a romantic package with wine which we had to go to reception and request as it was not in our room as advertised but in fairness they had allowed us to check in early. Would book elsewhere next time.

Estalagem Do Convento is an authentic convent and retains the old world charm. The staff was so welcoming and the rooms were clean and delightful, we spent some time sitting in a family room with a large stone fireplace. Furthermore, the location couldn't be better--it sits outside the old wall and city of Obidos. Once we checked in, we entered through the thick outer wall and meandered through the cobblestone streets of Obidos. The hotel recommended an enchanting place to eat and we enjoyed the local drink served in chocolate cups. I give this hotel a five star because of ambiance, price and location. I would definitely stay here again.

After staying in many modern hotels, we decided to spend a night at this convent to mix things up. The reviews were good, and it just seemed like it would be a different experience. It was. Walking out of your room, you see frosted glass windows that immediately make you think you are at church (which was kind of cool) but then there is a full bar/lounge by the lobby (which was also kind of cool.) It was a real mix of old and new. The room was comfortable but basic – lots of space but no air conditioning, a small TV, and limited supplies/services. For example, we had to ask for toilet paper about an hour into our stay because we only had a quarter of a roll and were three people. The breakfast, however, was really plentiful.

The town of Obidos is expensive. This cannot be overstated. It’s a great place, but you pay dearly when you stay overnight. The convent was the most expensive place we stayed during our two weeks in Portugal, and yet it was also the most basic/barebones. Parking is sometimes available on the street; we chose to park in a lot on the top of the hill because we were too scared to drive within the walls.

For dinner, we went to Pretencioso, and it was fantastic. Great quality, lovely owner, and nice ambiance. Highly recommended!

Once you survive the drive into town (the convent is not the easiest place to find…) and get over the sticker shock of Obidos, get settled and have a ginjinha in the lounge downstairs!

My husband and I stayed here for one night.. I was a little skeptical of staying in an old convent, but it intrigued me. We were not disappointed! The rooms were clean, the staff was very helpful, and the location was perfect! (check out the Pretentious restaurant nearby).
Bed was not the most comfortable and the room key chain was way too big, but it was worth it for the unique experience in this picturesque town!
