“Well worth the trip!”
Reviewed March 20, 2011

We found this restaurant on our last trip and had to return as it was one of the best meals we had in Portugal. It did not disappoint. Herculano once again made some excellent wine choices for us but the meal was chosen long in advance - the bacon wrapped shrimp, the pork tenderloin medallions and sausage on a skewer and roasted on an open fire. It was excellent

“Wonderful authentic Portuguese in a small charming restaurant”
Reviewed October 23, 2010

We had a delectable meal here, our waiter was kind and charming and professional, and our house wine was ridiculously good. Good varied menu, available in English, fantastic value. I simply can not imagine a better casual meal. This place is a find. It's right behind the round church in a tiny tiny strip mall. Plenty of free parking. Try the duck in rice (pato con arroz), or anything with the local clams. Desserts are huge and rich.

“Worth the detour”
Reviewed August 10, 2010

This lovely restaurant is a mile or so out of Obidos, but is worth going out of your way for. The staff were very friendly and helpful and tailored the meals to our individual requirements. The portions were large, there was a wide choice including several specials, and great value for money. We spent a very enjoyable couple of hours here and would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for an authentic Portuguese experience.

“Off the tourist track and a great discovery,”
Reviewed July 7, 2010

We were driving along the back roads to take a look at the stone chapel and looking for somewhere to eat. We really lucked out at this charming restaurant where everything was upscale but the prices, which were quite reasonable. We were the only foreigners there and the menu is only in Portugese, but we managed quite well.
In Portugal all restaurants automatically serve an interesting appetizer along with bread, butter and olives. This basket included 3 different cheeses, cured sausage, and smoked pork loin. This appetizer was priced under 3 Euros.
My husband had fish soup for a starter and I had vegetable soup. Both were delicious and very large portions. The soup was 2 Euros.
This was followed by grilled dorado served with boiled potatoes and fresh string beans, cabbage and broccoli. All the vegetables are grown locally and cooked in the Portugese manner which is much like the British veg. The dorado was 12.50 Euros.
For dessert my husband had fresh mango and I had a house special ice cream dessert, which was 3 scoops with fruit and chocolate and strawberry syrup.
We drank mineral water and did not have coffee but were still surprised at the bill which came to only 41 Euros. Somehow we had expected to pay more for this totally delicious meal.
If you are driving through Portugal it is well worth the short trip off the A8.

“Don't miss this Obidos favorite”
Reviewed December 5, 2009

O Caldeirao has been here forever and it's a favorite of locals. No wonder when you see the portions and the consistent quality of the food. It's traditional Portuguese and they always have daily specials of fresh fish and other superb creations. You will want to split the pork dishes between 2 or 3 people. The platters are always heaped with delicious pork and lots of vegetables. Traditional "bread stew" is fabulous and if you're there when they have fresh cod in addiitonal to the dry cod, go for it (share these dishes as well). This restaurant is located outside the walls of Obidos just beside a large white building that was once a sanctuary. You can see this building to the right on your way into Obidos. Skip the touristy places inside the walls and take the few extra minutes to get to O Caldeirao (the caldron/kettle). You'll be happy you did.
