I remember even today that after a long day of traveling we arrived at this beautiful place. I think it's one of the places that you can not let go. Every time I think about going back in Portugal, this is one of the first places that comes to mind.

“Underrated palace / Perfect day trip from Lisbon / Free entrance on Sunday”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2013

After having visited Lisbon so many times, we wanted to take some time and travel to some towns in the area in order to do some sightseeing.

We read some articles about Mafra and its palace, and we decided to pay it a visit.

We took the bus from Campo Grande bus station in Lisbon and, after a thirty minute trip, we arrived to this imposing palace and basilica. We were lucky enough to arrive on a Sunday, which meant free entrance.

The palace is imposing with luminous corridors and a unique library that we really liked.

“Beautiful Palace”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 8, 2013

The palace is enormous, beautiful and really worth to visit. The ticket price is not high and you get a discount if your a student. The churh is beautiful. Rooms inside are as they were in the time of the kingdom.

“Excellent introduction to Portugal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 20, 2013

Well worth the effort. The library was the star attraction. On the day we visited it was quiet. The palace was easily accessable with nothing roped off so it felt as though you in someones home and not a tourist attraction. Recommended.

“Worth it just for the library!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 26, 2012

If you've seen other big palaces in Europe, you'll know more or less what to expect at Mafra. There's nothing that architecturally amazing about this palace and there are so many rooms that they all kind of blur into one after a while. As other reviewers have noted, there's little in the way of explanatory text to help bring the history of the place alive. But I'd go back again and again (and pay €6 every time!) just to see the library. It is TOTALLY magnificent and you really have to see it to understand what I'm talking about... it's just breathtakingly, spectacularly beautiful. I went on a grey November day and had the place to myself. Makes for more fun than crawling around with thousands of other tourists at Versailles or similar. I'm really glad I went - don't expect too much, and you'll be pleasantly surprised :)
