We picked up a box of nata to go during a recent day in Belem. The restaurant was written up in several guide books and is just a short walk from the Monastery de Jeronimo. Their nata, a local small pastry tart, was the best we had in the entire month we were in Portugal. However, the place was packed. I would suggest you not go on a weekend and plan to purchase the pastries for take-out. There was a long line, but they moved quickly and the staff were pleasant and helpful. Definitely worth a stop!

I guess this is a must see if you are in Belem. The pastries are very good but pretty much all you want to get from here. We did have a nice experience with a nice waiter and a table of friendly guests (locals) next to us that were very helpful.

We saw the queue for this place so we said we'd see what all the fuss was about! Rather than queue for take away pastries we sat in for a coffee and tart. No problem whatsoever getting a table although the place was heaving. It's an enormous establishment! It was funny when we ordered as the waitress seemed so shocked when we only ordered one pastry each so we went on her recommendation and had two! They were absolutely delicious! Coffee was great too! All round delicious and indulgent! Glad u don't live anywhere near this place! ;-)

Now most people don't know but there are varieties of these Portuguese custard tarts simply known as "nata's". I've enjoyed these little sweets around the world but hadn't tried the ones from Nata's de belem (there are only made here and in this region) and looks like they are doing something right for its own variety. Its said they sell 11,000 a day!!! The ones you find here are less sweet and slightly on the more thin shell type that seems to be more like phyllo commonly used for savoury appetizers. Personally I prefer the slightly sweeter type but an afternoon cafe and a few of these..who could say no!

Dropped in to pick up some belem pastries during the day.The queue looked a little long but it was really quick to get in the door and there was shade from the sun to stand in. The staff were helpful , very efficient and quick at getting through our order . We got some of the belem custard pastries and they came with icing sugar and cinnamon to top them !!! They were really fresh and still warm so they were very tasty . Only regret is that we didnt sit down to enjoy them with some coffee but would hightly recommend dropping in as the shop has great selection of fresh and tasty treats !!
