Absolutely delicious! Best Portuguese custard in Lisbon. Crispy filo pastry on the outside, smooth, creamy custard on the inside. We had to order seconds.

Don't bother lining up at the counter. The restaurant is huge. Go around the counter on the left into the restaurant for table side service. Rest your tired feet after walking around Belem.

Long established Cafe and cake shop. Follow the crowds to this beautiful establishment. Theres plenty of rooms inside and despite its popularity with tourists and locals you will find a table somewhere. Famous for their Pasteils, which is puff pastry filled with custard and some secret ingredients inside. Its claimed they sell 20,000 cakes a day. Even in 2013 the prices are really good. White Coffee is just over a euro. Wine a few cent more. I had a plain roll with cheese and bacon and it was the freshest roll i've tasted. I also had one of those 20,000 cakes and it was wonderful as well. The shop at the front is always packed with locals buying cakes and bread to take home.

Every single article I read about Lisbon suggested eating a pasteis de Belem, which is a creamy custard filled filo dough round pastry. I had to do it. What a surprise! Those little buggers just melt in your mouth with an incredible amount of exquisite flavor. They are extermely light and go very well with either coffee or a sweet wine. The place is huge inside. You will probably see a line to get in but those are people waiting for take-outs. Find one of the many doors without a line and just walk in and sit down wherever you find an empty table. BTW, these are the original pasteis de Belem....imitations don't even come close. This is a "must do" when visiting Lisbon.

The name of the house derives of the little custard pies they make, also known as "pastéis de nata", for which they are famous, and have been making them since hundreds of years, evolving the Royal Family, the sugar from Brazil, and a secret recepy that is held by only a few select people... All the right ingredients for a step in time - just in time to be delighted!
