Description: The Calcuta .....started its journey of serving the Indian cuisine in 1998. Situated in one of the traditional and historical streets in the heart of Lisbon. The Calcuta is a real contribute to the preservation of authentic North Indian as well Goan gastronomy. (Goa: Old capital of the Portuguese empire in the east). Situated in Bairro Alto, a big attraction to all who wants to be distracted, and a very animated place with local life, it is the center of most of Lisbon's agitated nocturne life with typical restaurants, International cuisines, bars, fados houses, bookshops, theaters, some of the most creative ateliers, fashion and design stores. With belvederes, turned to the beautiful landscapes of Lisbon city, Bairro Alto takes part today of the historic and typical areas (with perpendicular and straight streets and flower adorned windows) much loved by the Lisbon people.

I have been to this restaurant more than 20 times, so that means something :) They serve authentic Indian food, the location is great in Bairro alto, the service is good and prices are reasonable. I would definitely recommend it.

Whenever we are in Lisbon we eat at Calcuta (actually their second business 'Calcuta 2'). There is a great selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes, as well as dishes with meat.

There is no terrace and on a very hot day it can be a bit hot inside. The location is great and close to bars and the bustle of Bairro Alto.

The service is extremely friendly and English is spoken.

The prices are fair and including drinks and entree you can feast for under 20€/pp.
We'll be back next year!

Went there after recomendation but was a little bit dissapointed. Have had excellent food every day in Lisbon but this indian was a bit bland and low on both spices and flavor. Not bad, but nothing that made my heart skip a beat either.

Being an indian origin.. was in search of Indian restaurant and my hotel suggested me the nearby… i dropped myself after whole day of lisbon downtown visit.. was completely tired but people there welcomed me in such a way , i forgot to go back and stayed in this beautiful place specially area(Bairro alto) for more 4 hours.
Authentic indian food , loved the saag paneer with naan and mango kulfi on my first visit and on third day i had a vegetable biriyani with raita.. very finely cooked and spiced biriyani … loved it.
Thank you very much whole team of Calcuta for great hospitality.
