The Praça do Município, as it is known in Portuguese, is aptly named after Lisbon's City Hall located on the eastern side of the square. From its second floor, featuring the colonnade-styled balcony, the Republic of Portugal was proclaimed in 1910. Noteworthy is the fact that a little over 2.5 years prior to the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic, on February 1, 1908, King Carlos I of Portugal was assassinated (along with his son, an heir apparent to the throne), across the street, about 350 feet away, kitty-corner of the Municipal Square (refer to our picture).
The square, a few steps west from Praça do Comércio, is a fine example of Pombaline architecture (the dominant style of post-1775 earthquake rebuilding of Lisbon) characteristic to Baixa, the downtown area where the Municipal Square is located, and Chiado.
The pavement is truly amazing. Sure, the traditional black and white Portuguese pavement ("calçada portuguesa") is out there, in so many parts of the city, and not even limited to Lisbon squares only but very common to Portugal's urbanscape, but on the Municipal Square it is really beautiful creating awesome optical wavy illusions.
In the middle of the square there is the Pillory of Lisbon. Erected after the 1775-earthquake it has barely if ever served as a real public defamation site, with only one person having been executed there.

Praça do Município or Municipal Square is a cute little public square in central Lisbon. There's not an awful lot in the square to see except for a monument and column in the centre as well as the odd public sculpture. There's the usual array of cafes and restaurants on the square and there's a few important buildings such as the city civic buildings and the tourist office opposite, but otherwise don't go out of the way to see it.

This is a big open space in the crowded old city with some very attractive old buildings all around. Worth a walk through.

The mosaic cobbles make this square as they sweep like waves in a repeating pattern. At either end of the square are a couple of pretty fountains and in the centre a towering column. The National theatre stands at the top of the square which is tree lined before shops and buildings edge the square. Lookout for the fabulous shop frontage of the jewellers Pratas Joias. The only downside of this square there were a few dubious looking characters. We were also approached a couple of times by men selling cocaine. I'd have thought seniors were unlikely customers.
