The café is down the street on the south side of the cathedral, a gentrified spot in Alfama. The furniture is as eclectic as the menu and invites spending time under the vaulted stone arches. The ancient stone floor probably pre-dates the great earthquake of 1755.

The service is enormously pleasant. The owner chatted with us, and the waiters clearly enjoy working here. Many of those lunching while we were seemed to be regulars.

We shared a Caprese salad with surprisingly ripe tomatoes for wintertime and good mozzarella, then a curried beef dish with rice that was quite tasty. Their cakes look good but we tried an apple strudel, for which the pastry could have been crisper. (Note: Austrian items form only a small part of their offerings.)

The music, initially too loud, was turned down without request soon after we sat down.

RECOMMENDED for the comfort of the room, the warm service and the out-of-the-ordinary menu.

This was a fab little cafe near the Cathedral that served delicious food (especially breakfast) and was open 10am until late. The ambiance was great and the staff really welcoming. We went back three days in a row it was so good!! Delicious coffees and juices. Definitely worth a visit.

Had a light lunch here: a special soup of carrot and pumpkin with coconut milk and a side salad for only 2.50 euros. The food was simple albeit delicious. Comfortable, quirky decor with a selection of international books, magazines, newspapers, etc.

Only complaint: the staff allowed a man to walk around to the different groups of people in the cafe and try to sell his music. He seemed to be friends with the staff, and had a recorded CD, but I still thought this was unprofessional. I preferred not to be bothered, though, and he certainly didn't try for too long.

While hiking around the scenic neighborhood, I ran across this place and had a bowl of spinach and turnip soup, glass of Vinho Branco and an expresso at this funky coffee shop in the Alfama neighborhood. It’s laid out as a series of miss-matched sofas, chairs and tables – some just a small place to perch. The walls are lined with books and magazines that patrons are welcomed to borrow for the duration of their stay.
