Many people don't understand Portuguese food. The BEST food in Portugal is "home cooking" IN people's homes!! Restaurants and restaurant food can vary from the good (almost never "excellent" except for a handful of Michelin star restaurants) to the positively ineible (and occasionally even worse than that!!)
The Casa do Leao is perched up on the castle hill in one of the medieval walls of the castle. It has views which are incomparable--if one could have only ONE view of Lisbon to remember, THIS is it!! As part of the Pousada chain, it's decor aims at the 18th c.., and, though much of it is repro and ersatz, it's pretty GOOD ersatz. Service is "Pousada quality", by which I mean that young, new, inexperienced staff may possibly try too hard and act stuffy, but the older staff can be a positive delight!
The food can occasionally be average, but it is never, EVER, bad and sometimes can reach levels of deliciousness well beyond the norm in Portugal. It all depends upon WHAT one orders. Wines are of "a certain standard", and thus never plonk (but they are also never exactly cheap, either).
A good meal at Casa do Leao is not cheap, but (when the weather is right!) it is generally WELL worth the money!! And, as I say, the view is fabulous!!!!!
