We decided to eat here on the recommendation of our guide book but were disappointed. I ordered the pork with clams - it was so salty and drenched in oil, I could barely eat it. The clams just tasted of salt. My partner ordered the fish with orange, expecting something interesting. All it was, was a some fried fish with a slice of orange rather than lemon.

Simply great small restaurant. Priced very resonable. Dinner for two, with wine under 40 euro. Watch out for a many small dishes they serve right away, and than they charge for it. ( cheese, olives, bread, ham etc). Cheese is well worth to try thou. Pork or seafood is a way to go. Ask for daily specials, i had an awesome fresh grilled sea bass.

Bairro Alto is stuffed with bars and restaurants and most guidebooks offer inadequate advice. We stumbled on Bota Alta which was an unexpected highlight of our trip. It has a bustling informal brasserie feel but we were made very welcome and the food and service were simply superb. Great range of wines, try some of their Alentejo reds and the bacalhao was awesome and not too salty as we tended to find elsewhere. Would heartily recommend it to anyone wanting somewhere that does its job well and has no need to show off. Excellent.

I find some of the comments about this restaurant puzzling – This is a typical Bairo Alto house, small and compact in narrow streets – hence the restaurant is going to be the same there is no room to extend, but it is extremely friendly, excellent food; fresh, local produced homemade food great variety, and the wines are Portuguese – which is what it is a typical Portuguese restaurant authentic – totally worth a visit or two!!!!
