Grande Pensao Residencial Alcobia
Ranked #152 of 255 Hotels in Lisbon
Reviewed January 9, 2013

We chose this hotel due to the good price and location in the historic center of Lisbon. Steeply climbing stairs, small rooms and everything that corresponds to a small hotel in the old quarter. Polite and helpful lady at reception, regular room cleaning every day in your absence. Even if you spend the whole day in the hotel and go outdoor for 10 minutes to vizit supermarket, cleaning will be carried out in shortest time. One fact does not allow me to put a high score that hotel. We came to Alcobia for the Christmas holidays. The hotel was very damp. Humidity was felt everywhere in the room especially in the bedding. Furthermore the hotel has no central heating and we tried to get warm, by air conditioner turned to heat transfer. This did not save us from the cold. Advice to anyone wishing to spend the holidays in this hotel - never come here in the winter!
For other characteristics hotel is quite reasonable.

Our room was spacious for a pension and we appreciated the balcony. It appeared to be generally good value. We were concerned about the location - my travel companion was a smoker and she felt unsafe going out for her morning smoke so I ended up accompanying her. Our major concern was the reception's response to the blocking up of our toilet. We were blamed for this occurrence - really? we would deliberately block up our toilet? I don't think so. We were told firmly that no other room would be made available, that we should use the reception toilet ( we were on the fourth floor at the very back of the building - a traipse to the lift, 3 storeys by lift, 2 flights of stairs - in the middle of the night? What made us particularly angry was the pervasive smell of sewerage through the pension which indicated that there was a significant problem developing. We couldn't wait to leave this hotel (we were with a tour group). From then we referred to the hotel as El Cobra which aptly described the attitude of reception to our problem.

- Friendly staff: willing to help you and suggest nice place to eat, listen Fado and order a taxi
- The window of our room did not close well so it was a bit noisy but still we are satistified
- The location is very central, near Rossio metro station and Restauradores train station
- Big tv with lots of non-Portuguese channels

I like to say that this is a great value for money hotel. Service is good. Basically women provide very god advice and service, not like that men in reception. I got 3 single beds so I recommend to put a note when your are doing the booking as we were 4 (2 children). We asked for 3 beds but I forgot to ask for a double bed.
Cleaning need a little of improvement, one off my boy slept with a book and next day we found the book in the bed meaning that the didn't do the bed properly for a hotel. Breakfast is good some times was cold so I needed fyi ask for a hot coffee and milk, but overall was quite complete.
Location is the best that you can expect, close to everything (castle, public transport, etc).

My husband and I stayed here for two nights. The location itself is good if you want to be in the centre of the city but perhaps wasn't the safest of areas at night. We missed the entrance twice as it is not exactly very impressive, simply a doorway and some stairs leading up to reception on the next floor. You then have a further two flights of stairs to carry your luggage before you reach the lift! The room itself was basic but very clean. The bed was only a double and the pillows were lumpy. The only toiletries provided was soap and sachets of shampoo. We asked for a castle view but we got a view of roofs and guttering so wasn't worth opening the curtains. The staff were nice enough and breakfast OK but personally I have stayed in better hotels. I would struggle to say this was anything more than 2 star hotel at most.

We booked that inexpensive location for the start of our Portugal vacation. It's absolutely centrally located, around the corner is one of the main squares of Lisbon.
The rooms are o.k., a bit outdated though. The floor uneven, the bathroom could use some remodeling. But it was clean. And for a two-star location in Portugal, it was absolutely good value. It's not a Hilton, so your expectations have to be different than that.
The breakfast was o.k., not fancy. But it was certainly enough food available and they refilled, once something was gone, immediately.
The lady at the front desk was very helpful. She not only made some good recommendations for a restaurant in the Bairo Alto, but she also called us a taxi upon our leave, which did not overcharge us - besides this time they always ripped us off.
If I am on a budget trip to Lisbon, I'd book this hotel again.

This is a lovely hotel in a great location for all the major sights. The location makes it easy to travel around the city. The rooms are average in size but very clean. Breakfast is fairly basic. The staff are wonderful , friendly and helpful. The easiest way to get here from the airport is on the aerobus to Rossio. From Rossio square it's only 2 or 3 minutes walk to the hotel. Take the bus back to the airport if you are flying with easy jet as you need to go to terminal 2 for departures and we wasted ages trying to find this out when we arrived at the airport by Metro! Also there is a really great restaurant round the corner from the hotel . It's the one beside the exit from the underground car park and beside the bank in praca da figueira . The food is great and prices are very reasonable . Two meals , bottle of wine and four large beers was only 40 euros.

Room Tip: Rooms on fourth floor have great views over the city and the convento do carmo or over the castle at...
