When I went to Georgetown in the late 1960's I was assigned a dorm room freshman year in a residence hall which was condemned and knocked down five or six years later. No view to speak of (but better than my room at Hotel Italia, which faced an air shaft). Yes, the bed in my freshman year dorm was OK, and everything was clean. That was about all you could say for it. Well, that description also fits Hotel Italia.

The plus side is that the receptionist at check-in was extremely friendly and helpful. So long as you're fit enough to walk 10 minutes to the Metro, the location is great; it's in a very nice, mixed use district of Lisbon. Several restaurants and cafes are close by.

Think of getting something at the small supermarket across the street to supplement the hotel's breakfast, especially if (like me) you're on a gluten free diet. The hotel does offer the most basic sliced meat and cheese at its breakfast buffet, but the fresh fruit offering is modest.

A goodly proportion of the guests are drivers for Transdev, one of the intercity bus companies operating in Portugal. The take up half of the breakfast room when it opens at 0730.

This is a 2 star basic hotel away from the main area of Lisbon, but within a couple of blocks of the excellent Gulbenkian museum (closed on Mondays) and about 10 minutes walk in either direction to two of the metro lines. It is clean, has an elevator, friendly staff and ok breakfast and is perfectly adequate for a short stay. There is a restaurant outside and others nearby and a Lidl just across the road.

Friendly receptionist, easy access and nice area to stay in Lisbon. The room was adequate, the shower better than it looked. We had a balcony looking out over the citrus trees in the hotel's rear. The Italian restaurant next door was very nice. But, with the windows open it was very noisy as it seemed to be under the flight.

The hotel is located in a nice and quiet residential neighborhood, in between two subway stations: San Sebastian and Saldanha on the Red line. It takes about 10 minutes to walk to either of those two. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes in the neighborhood and a discount supermarket Lidl just across the street. It is a convenient location, once you learn how to get to either of those stations. The hotel is rated 2 stars, and it measures up to this rating very precisely. It is a clean, modest, no-frills facility. My room was on the second floor, and it was fairly big, clean and comfortable. The internet connection was great, very fast and never failed. The staff at the hotel was very friendly, welcoming and efficient. They do laundry on site, and it is a nice feature for a 2-star hotel and very inexpensive. I would stay in the hotel again and would recommend it for travelers on a budget, especially if you travel alone.
