“Great Belem Tower”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2014

This majestic tower was the gateway to Lisbon and also the defence. System at the entrance to the Tagus River. The hop on hop off bus stopped here after the Jeronimas Monastery. It is designed as a UNESCO world heritage site.

“What a great structure!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2014

This structure is one of the most pure "Manueline" structures in Portugal. The views from the tower are great. There is a bit of a line to get in but it's much shorter than the Monastery O Jeronimos -buy your ticket for the monastery here and skip the line at the monastery which is REALLY long. Don't skip this site- you'll be missing one of the most beautiful buildings in Portugal.

“Torre de Belem”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2014

Great view, not really worth it for the price. Lots of very narrow stairs and people but there is a good system to let people know whether or not it is safe to go up or down.

“Nice bit of history”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2014 via mobile

It's pretty awe inspiring to think that Vasco da Gama sailed past this and knew he was home.. It's right on the river, close locale to several other major sights so it's convenient sightseeing. The tower was closed for the Easter holiday when we were there but there's a nice area around it to relax and take a load off for a bit.

“Take this as last stop after monastery etc”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2014

After Monastry and this sea going Discoveries monument, this Unesco world heritage listed tower is worth for short stop. It has small bridge to it, during my visit, tide was so low that you were able to go next to the tower. Visit also "Museu dos Combatente" military museum next to tower. There is military memorial, similar to Vietnam memorial wall in DC, honouring those abroad fallen soldiers.
If you can not take a ferry cross the river, my tip is that leaving with a tram 15, walk bit direction to west as all tourists come from tram stops of tower and monastery, most cases leaving people at stops.
