“Medieval Fort”
Reviewed December 8, 2013

Jutting out into the river, and resembling a 16th century ship with a high qusrterdeck, this castle was built to defend the river approach to Lisbon.
With narrow, winding stairways, and small cannon suitable for stopping a small ships, it gives an insight into the time period.
Amuse yourself by reading the English translation about a rhinoceros that arrived as a gift from India. Never stint on translations!

“A historical tower”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

We made three trips to Belem and the first time we went to see the tower. Unfortunately we spent a lot of time walking to it as our tram/light rail broke down way before our stop and we had to walk quite a bit to get to the Belem tower. It was fairly nondescript to look at,even though it is of historical significance

“Remarkable Historical Tower- Must See”
Reviewed November 30, 2013

The Tower is reached by a small gangplank- it was once further out in the river but evidently the Tagus has receded over time. This is the place where the voyages of discovery embarked, the Armada assembled and Columbus stopped on his return to Europe. It is a beautiful tower with many medieval embellishments. The outer part is the best but we did take the very tight stairs to explore inside as well. We were lucky to visit on a bright sunny day and the river views from the Tower were spectacular. It is definitely a highlight and should not be missed.
