“Far better in person”
Reviewed September 10, 2013

Before my trip to Lisbon (as with any vacation trip I take), the first thing I did was to look through the TripAdvisor's list of the best rated attractions in the area, among which was Belem, of course.

Honestly, it did not look that much impressive on the photos but it looked interesting enough to visit, and since it was also one of the landmarks of the city, I of course went to see it. And boy would I have been sorry to have missed it - it was truly beautiful, and looked much better than on the photos, which is often not the case.

“Like something from Gormenghast!!!!”
Reviewed September 8, 2013

I found the Tower of Belem to be fascinating. It looked like something from Mervyn Peake's "Gormenghast" with it's Gothic aspects, and seemed to be floating just off the land. There was also a really good system for ascending and descending the narrow spiral staircase to the top of the tower. Lovely view and interesting display in the lower area.

It`s a beautiful monument but not much to see, once inside. You do have beautiful views of the see and all the surrounding area.
I had the Lisbon Card, which gives me free entry and I didn`t have to wait in the queue to get in, I just walked in, and for that a lot of dirty looks. the Lisbon card also gives you free entry to the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos, and no waiting in the queue either.

“Must see!”

Very much worth the visit. Torre de Belem and the monastery of Jeronimos are enchanting places to visit. Easy to reach through bus from the Figueira Square bus stop. Our best pictures were taken there! Also, don't forget to taste the popular Portuguese sweets (Pastel de Belem) at the famous pastry just near the monastery.
