Yesterday (a Sunday) was the only date we could go to Belem. it seems every other tourist in Portugal was also going there. We then found out that museums are free between 10am - 2pm and so the transport was packed and impossible to get on. Once there Belem was nice, but would have been better to visit on any other day that a Sunday. Make sure you visit the monastery and Maritime museum. Both very good.

Easily reached by tram 15, the monastery and maritime museum provide an engaging respite from the heat. If you want to escape the crowds, the botanical gardens are recommended; they are a bit run down but still interesting and a good space to relax. The monument to the navigators is awesome, and Belem tower a beautiful landmark, a great chance to paddle and have a sangria by the waterfront.

The monastery is extraordinary - the front door to the church, the quad, the tombs (including Camoes and Vasco da Gama), and the elephant statues. Don't miss the custard tart shop and the tower!

If you're in Lisbon for more than just a day, you have to go out to Belém. Don't bother going up the Tower or up the Discoveries monument, but you must see the interior of the Jeronimos church (it's free - you only have to pay to see the monastery cloisters). If you have an interest in modern art, see the free Berardo Collection at the Belém Cultural Center.

Of great historical importance and a pure delight to the eye. Lovely views of the Tage river and the 25th of April bridge. Buy the combined ticket with the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos down the road and walk there. On e way check out the free contemporary art museum
