Much to see in the area of Belem from the tower by the sea to the Jeronimos Monastery, the gardens and the special pasteles ( little cakes ). This area can fill the best part of your day including a leisurely walk along the waterfront and a lunch on one of the many terrraces. The food in those restaurants is basic typically for tourists but ok. During the summer it will be a bit crowded in the main street and around the restaurants, but the gardens will be a nice respite. if you "hopped" off one of the sightseeing buses check the stops carefully to "hop" back on as they are not where you expect them to be by looking at their map. It is best to ask the driver to show before you get off.

I really enjoyed a visit to Belem which included a visit to the Geronimo Monastery, the Belem Tower, and the Maritime Museum. The Monastery is a UNESCO world heritage site and the central courtyard/cloister contains remarkable stone work. The Belem Tower is about a half hour walk away along the waterfront and you can buy a combined ticket to see both attractions. It is a lovely setting to see the Tagus River. The Maritime Museum is located beside the Jeronimo Monastery and has a beautiful, comprehensive set of boat models illustrating Portuguese sea history. The display is pretty didactic and not all displays are in English. There also is a wing to this museum with full sized boats which are quite impressive. If you are into sailing and naval history it is worth a visit.

Getting to Belem can be a challenge if you go by tram. It is a half hour trip from downtown (Baixa) and if you are on a small trolley it can be quite crowded. The larger, newer trollies are recommended but you need to have change to ride them.

Overall, I recommend you see this area.
