Despite it’s location two doors down from the McDonald’s in Belem, NERO is a culinary delight, with EXCEPTIONAL service and mind-blowingly delicious food.
Our family stumbled upon this place while walking around Belem, and ended up having the best meal of our trip here. Unfortunately, it was on the last night, otherwise we’d have gone back. However, it’s a good excuse in itself to head back to Portugal.
The menu is very “American-friendly” -- with deboned fish options, fresh salads, and some more approachable entrees and tapas. However, for anyone with an adventurous palate, this place does not disappoint. I ordered the octopus with cuttlefish ink potatoes and steamed spinach, and it was the single-best entree I have ever had in my LIFE. Rich, succulent, savory and refreshing in the perfect way, this dish, you can just tell, was made with love from the best ingredients in the world. This place takes their seafood seriously, and their attention to detail WILL NOT DISAPPOINT. Whether you’re a weary traveller just craving some good old-fashioned vegetables, or a foodie with a flavor for the exotic, there is something for everyone.
Did I mention the service was amazing? Because it is first-rate. For a relatively casual restaurant, we were served by some of the nicest people I’ve ever met (Not just on this trip, but in my life) who take incredible pride in their food, this restaurant and your experience. They weren’t just servers, they were hosts, and made you feel incredibly welcome. It was a really special evening for our family, celebrating the last night of our trip, and the servers were an important part of that.
Also, the atmosphere of the restaurant is very charming. Right on the wide stretch of park near the river, outdoor dining was a delight. The interior of the restaurant was incredibly chic. So much so, that we got the information on where to purchase the chairs (from Branca Lisboa, the R&B Chair in solid ash. Beautiful).
All in all, this place has a special place in our hearts. It was more than just a great restaurant, but a truly wonderful experience.
NOTE: Travellers were a family of four (4) -- Parents early 50s, two “adult-children” in 20s. Wouldn’t recommend for families with young kids. Great for anyone who enjoys a great glass of wine, sparkling conversation, exceptional service and appreciates amazing food.
