“worth visiting”
Reviewed August 10, 2014

Even people usually don't visit cemeteries, this one you shouldn't miss. It is on the last stop of 28E tram. Here you won't find a lot of famous Portuguese because most of them are in Panteao Nacional or Mosteiro dos Jeronimos. You can take a walk around cemetery and see the sepulchral architecture. There are some family tombs made by famous artist, like Canova. Near this area is Tapada das Necessidades and Mercado da Ribeira which you can visit after.

“Tranquil and peaceful”
Reviewed May 24, 2014 via mobile

Some people are not into visiting cemeteries. But if you are not afraid, then pay a visit. The cemetery is very well taken care of. In the middle of the cemetery is a chapel.

Beautiful family tombs and some interesting looking single tombs. Look through the glass doors of some and you may see six coffins inside. Some have passed long ago. Others are more recent.

Wanders around and feel the tranquility. Go to the edge for a view of the bridge and the river.

Tram 28 last stop is just a few steps from the gate of this cemetery.

“Peaceful end after a bumpy ride”
Reviewed March 21, 2014

I guess you wouldn't go out of your way to visit a cemetery normally, but if you are on the famous Tram 28 it makes sense to go right to the far terminus and if there – why not visit the cemetery which is directly opposite? It’s a very peaceful place and you can recover from the ride: be warned, the route are largely cobbled and I don’t think the tram as any suspension!
I believe it’s the largest cemetery in the city and the coffins are largely kept in family vaults, which with its own locked front door. Many however have windows and you can see the coffins, or their positions and often a small shrine in the centre. I understand there is an explanatory area for visitors, but this was shut when we went.
We went to the furthest end of the cemetery to find a good viewpoint of the ramp towards the 25th April bridge and local area. Well worth spending half an hour there before returning on the tram.

“Wonderful cemetery”
Reviewed March 5, 2014

The joyful ride through the streets of of Lisbon with tram line 28E ended at this cemetery. Not mentioned in our travel book, My partner and I went for a stroll and I was pleasantly surprised. The graves look like miniature houses and resembled something like a city of the dead. I strolled for an hour or so through the family graves, before I ventured on. Lovely place, I would definitely like to visit the cemetery again on day. Although I haven't went on a tour, I think that it would be recommendable.

I really enjoyed wandering around here. It was interesting to see the family monuments and they are really well looked after. Most certainly recommend you pop in at the end of the Tram 28 run.
