“Small is beautiful”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

We had a great trip to Lisbon recently due in no small part to our stay at Teatro B & B. It was not that easy to find though having a large scale map of the area to hand certainly helped our taxi driver.

The biggest plus point is Teatro's excellent location right in the heart of the old city. A 5 min stroll gets you to the Bairro Alto with its restaurants and night life and it takes only slightly longer to reach Baixa, the lower town and central hub of Lisbon.

Teatro is compact but well designed and functional. We were on the third floor in a room overlooking the nearby theatre. We were not troubled by street noise. The room was very clean and the bed extremely comfortable. The bathroom in black and red with the clever use of mirrors to accentuate its size, is interesting. But one criticism is the almost total lack of shelf space for personal items. However the rain shower was good. In the bedroom itself, hanging space is at a premium.

Access to the B & B from the street is via a lift which is on the small side. It can be a challenge to get a even a moderate amount of luggage into it. Teatro best serves those who travel light.

Breakfast is very good with a wide variety of fruit, pastries and ready cooked food along with the usual continental ham, cheese, etc. There are a lot of tables in a small space, some pushed together, so when the hotel is full it can feel a bit cramped and uncomfortable if too many guests are breakfasting at any one time.

Finally, as reviewers have commented before, the staff are very friendly and helpful and nothing seems too much trouble. This along with Teatro's ideal position far outweigh the minor criticisms. All in all a most enjoyable experience!

Room Tip: The upper floors are better

Dear Guest,

We would like to thank you for your 5-star review of Teatro Bed & Breakfast and especially for taking the time to write it.

We’re very happy that you liked the comfortable bed and the design of the room, as well as the rich breakfast and particularly the location. It is in fact one of the most enjoyable areas of the city, not only for tourists but also for the local residents.

You’ll be glad to know that just this week we began installing extra shelves in some of the bathrooms that were admittedly lacking in that aspect. Also, we can tell you first hand that in a few months the Breakfast Room won’t feel so cramped anymore, even if all the guests come to have breakfast at the same time, but you’ll have to come and see for yourself.

About the lifts there’s not much we can do. They are, as you say, a bit on the small side and as other have put it, somewhat noisy, but we couldn’t get approval from the municipality to install new ones and so we are, unfortunately, stuck with them.

Finally, we would also like to tell you that it’s very rewarding for everyone at Teatro B&B to know that we’ve played a significant part in making your trip to Lisbon a great one. We hope to make your next trip to Lisbon even better.

Everything about Teatro B and B is lovely. The theatre themed decor, the comfortable bed, the delicious options at breakfast, but especially the staff. Claudia makes you feel like you're family and Daniel and the young women who manage the breakfast room are all outstanding. The young man who checked us out on April 27 saved our trip memories when he worked with our taxi driver to locate my camera case with a full memory card in it. The driver found it and drove back to the airport to return it to me.

Yes, the rooms are not large. We paid for the superior room, which is larger, and had plenty of space by being organized. And, yes, there is street noise. (A good pair of ear plugs solved that problem.) But we enjoyed being in an old neighborhood where we found a good and friendly local restaurant. (We spent our first four nights at a high rise hotel on Avenida da Liberdade; we could just as well have been in NYC.)

The hotel and its location are perfect for feeling like you're a part of the city. Claudia and her colleagues are perfect for making you feel like you're part of the family. When we return to Lisbon, we will stay at Teatro B and B!

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights in late March. We enjoyed this small hotel. The location was excellent, close to many restaurants, sites, subway and tram lines. The rooms were very clean, comfortable and fun in the theater-themed decor. Staff were friendly and helpful. But the best of all was the breakfast! Lots to choose from and very tasty. The pastries were lovely and the coffee was strong! We would like to go back to see more of Lisbon, a wonderful city, and would definitely stay here again!

Modern but full of character, we stayed at this little hotel in the theatre district of Lisbon for a long weekend. The hotel rooms are small, but absolutely reasonable for the price you pay. The pictures on the website show the decor, which is definitely "unusual" but we liked it - far better than staying in a bland and boring chain hotel. The fittings and furnishings are new and excellent. Our shower was strong and space was like a "wet room". The staff are amongst the best we've ever come across. They were all really helpful, friendly and knowledgeable.. Now to the breakfast...this must be the main attraction....a wonderful spread with loads to choose from and including some cooked elements such as scrambled eggs and portuguese "bacon" for no extra cost. Husband got caught out by the donuts and had to have three! I tried the little portuguese pastries and was just as greedy. But there are also lots of fruits and yoghurts to balance out the healthiness. Teatro is in a central part of Lisbon, with some good restaurants and cafe's close by (definitely try eating at the old alehouse (can't remember its name) round the corner which is breathtaking). The famous number 28 tram can be boarded just down the street and will take you to the Alfama area which is a must-do trip. There is only one word of caution about this hotel. Because the rooms are small they have used lots of mirrors and glass doors. Our bathroom had a plain glass sliding door, so if your partner came along the hall you could be seen on the loo. Other rooms had plain glass between the shower and the room. So if you are squeamish about such things you may want to mention this when you book.

Room Tip: you may want to ask about the glass doors on the bathroom (read the review)

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for reviewing your stay at Teatro B&B. It’s great for everyone that is involved in the daily life of Teatro B&B to know that our work is appreciated and that we are doing things right, so thank you for the kind words as well.

We know the décor is “unusual” and it comes down to a matter of personal taste, most of our guests like it but others might not… we’re just glad you did! Anyway, we definitely agree with you that it’s much better to stay with us than to stay at some “boring” chain hotel.

Regarding the bathrooms, some of the rooms offer more privacy than others, and the last thing we want is to make our guest feel uncomfortable during their stay, so if you are reading this and have any questions on that matter please let us know through the “remarks” section (when you book online) or by contacting us directly before you book (phone and e-mail above) and we will gladly help you find a solution that is pleasing to you.

Thanks again for taking the time to write this review and we hope to see you soon. The donuts and pastries await!

P.S. The old alehouse is called “Cervejaria Trindade” and it is actually the oldest one in Lisbon. No trip to Lisbon is complete without going there!

Stayed for 3 days in late April and the hotel/b&b provided a very stylish room, excellent breakfast and friendly and professional staff. The hotel is small with just a door on to the street and you have to go to the first floor for the reception area, which was just big enough for one person to occupy. There are two small elevators which make getting to the rooms fine as long as you don't have large amounts of luggage. We had the room Pierrot which was a good size considering the tight size restrictions of the hotel and the decoration was fantastic in silver and white.

The breakfast room is small but the choices available large and the staff personable and efficient in the small space. All the pastries are to die for.

The location of the hotel is its best asset, with everywhere a tourist to Lisbon in easy reach. We walked and used the trams/buses totally and it was perfect. The area is safe and there are lots of good restaurants nearby - we used the staff's suggestions and they were good.

Would definitely stay again at the Teatro next time in Lisbon.

Room Tip: Pierrot room has good size but it could be difficult for a large person to get by the end of the bed...

Original rooms, good breakfast. Central and walking distance to most highlights of the city. Kind professional discrete personnel. Maybe the loo could have been a little more hidden.... Overall I recommend it and would surely go back to Teatro on a next stay in Lisbon.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for staying with us and also for the very nice review.
Reviews that point out the slight lack of privacy of the bathrooms turn out to be very helpful both for us at Teatro B&B and, more importantly, for potential guests that this way can better decide whether or not they will feel comfortable or at ease during their stay. We do understand that this feature is not a consensual one amongst our guests, but we’re certainly glad it hasn’t put you off of returning to Teatro B&B in the future.
