“Delightful Intro to Fado”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

We knew next to nothing about Fado so when we found this little museum after wandering down the hills from the heights of the Alfama district we thought we would try it out. There is an entrance fee. If you actually take the time to read the exhibit tags/info and listen to the music excerpts in each space, you will get a good idea of what Fado was like in it's heyday and it's origins. Our 19 year old son found it just as delightful as we did. Don't miss the little sidewalk cafe's on the hillside opposite as there is sometimes someone playing live Fado during lunch at high season. Budget about 30-45 minutes for the visit.

“Nothing here”
Reviewed September 3, 2012

This was a big disappointment. We did not have time on our Lisbon trip to visit a Fado bar, but thought the museum would provide some insight into the music. Wrong. Just some fairly static videos and some earphones to listen to some soundtracks. Missed opportunity and not worth the entrance fee.

The Museum of Fado offers you an historical review of the birth, development and rebirth and expansion of this form of popular music, fado, which has been considered for ages as Portugal's national song, and is now a UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage.

“Really interesting”
Reviewed June 7, 2012

We probably would not have thought to visit this place if we were not staying right next to it, but we really enjoyed it. I would recommend it if you are interested in music. They have great recordings of numerous fado singers that you can sit and listen to on headphones as well as taking the tour with an audio commentry.
