Booking this hotel seemed like a no brainer, with the amazing reviews and fundamentally a 5* hotel - what could go wrong? Answer: not much – it was a great choice. I got this hotel through a package deal via “travelrepublic.com” and chose the ‘twin superior buffet breakfast’ (oh yea, they’ve got loads of fancy names for the different rooms).
The hotel is very closely located to the metro stop ‘Jardim Zoologico’. As I told my friend, all we had to do was look and past the fly over you see this superbly tall tower of a hotel. Decorated on the side of the tower is the name, Corinthia (see photo). From Lisboa airport, it's a very easy and quick metro ride (40min max with 2 interchanges) to the hotel. From the airport, follow the exit signs towards the metro. Once at the metro station, decide what ticket to buy (it's very easily translated into English so you can decide what the best deal is for you; single €1.50/24hr pass €6), then navigate your way to 'Jardim Zoologico'. This is what we did and got there with no problems.
We arrived at the hotel late in the night (~ 11pm) and were pretty impressed with the grand entrance and how clean and professional it looked. I made a note to notice the surrounding buildings, and though this hotel is very modern and well maintained it stands in a relatively poorly developed area, with buildings opposite and adjacent looking rather run down.
Our room was located on the 14th floor and was neatly presented. Clean sheets, ample amount of towels and a relatively decently sized twin room. A note: we had a problem with our safe, which was quickly fixed by the hotel staff. There was complimentary tea/coffee but no milk (which we requested and came in a pot, free of charge). I always judge a room by its toilet/bathroom and this room did not fail to delivery. A big bath with a fixed shower head, two sinks, a bidet and toilet with music playing in the background proved to be 4* star worthy.
We enjoyed the buffet breakfast that followed early morning (7-11am). They have a huge range of food, from your hot ‘English’ breakfast to savoury delights. The prize of the breakfast however was the specially made omelettes by the chef ‘Stephen’. You select what spices/ingredients to add to your omelette and he makes it absolutely superbly. This is the unique part of the breakfast, and me and my mate enjoyed quite a few servings of our specially made omelette. Be sure to check this out!
After our endeavours through the city, nothing really inspired us for food and therefore we decided to eat at our hotel. The hotel has dinner facilities with buffet choices and/or a fixed menu to look at. We decided to go to the bar and order our food there, as here they had a different range of food which was cheaper and more appealing to us. From the bar, the waiter was very pleasant and helpful. He went through the ‘snack/dinner’ menu (which is custom to the bar and not the main dining area). We ordered calamari and mozzarella sticks, both were absolutely scrumptious! Whilst watching the footy, casually speaking to the waiter who was telling us about local things to do, we ordered our main. We went for the ‘Chicken bacon sandwich’ and it was absolutely lovely. We bought one main and that was enough to fill us both. After this, we bought a dessert each that was ‘Apple Crumble’ with vanilla-cinnamon ice cream. Goodness me, this was absolutely lovely! With drinks and a full 3-course menu, the price came up to ~€60. I would definitely recommend dining at the bar as it’s a pleasant experience, cheap with very helpful staff.
The swimming pool is free and located on the second floor. I was put off by the damp smell and small size of the pool so didn’t bother venturing in. The sauna is also available but came at a cost of €21 for 3 hours?! Err, no. Also the spa choices are large but extremely expensive so didn’t dare bat an eyelid towards that.
Overall, I would thoroughly recommend this hotel if you get a good deal – which you almost undoubtedly should get. It isn’t quite 5* but lives up to certain 5* qualities in dining, presentation and atmosphere.
