Checked into the Hotel Mundial and immediately noticed how the staff seem to be trying that little bit harder. We we were allocated a room but were told at reception if we didn't like it we could change it. Had dinner in the 8th floor and it seemed that little bit better and was very enjoyable. Things are tough in Lisbon right now but the Hotel Mundial is rising to the challenge

What we liked about this hotel:
- friendly, efficient staff
- nicely decorated, spacious, clean and very quiet room, that was perfect for parents with a child: it had a single bed in a separate corner
- the lounge on the rooftop (9th floor) with fantastic views over the city: perfect for a glass of port wine after a sightseeing day
- the central location: tram nr 28 and 12 right in front of the hotel, metro at the other end of the square also just a few steps away
- varied breakfast buffet with fresh fruit and big choice of breads, breakfast room with big windows and nice view

What we did not like:
The food in the Varanda Restaurant on the 8th floor was extremely disappointing. It was the worst food we had in Lisbon eventhough it was the most expensive. They even charged us for a "Chef's suggestion" that they just served without order, but they removed it from the bill after we complained. It's a shame the food isn't better - the ambiance would be lovely!

We have been to Lisbon and stayed in this hotel for 1 week. We were more impressed by the public cab driver than the hotel receptionist. The driver was more chatty and telling us about where and what to go and see in Lisbon. I personally would like to see the receptionist smile a little, obviously this is due to the lack of trainings. However this lack of service was compensate by a free dinner at the hotel (this was kind of lovely surprise because when we booked the hotel we were not informed about this free dinner if we stay there for 5 days or more). Location of the hotel is in an ideal spot. We were given a room on the 6th floor with a view of the castle, which we requested and is highly recommended. I was slightly disappointed with the size of the window though. Although we admire the view we wish the window size is a littel bigger. Our room is, we understand, a standard twin bedroom, with reasonable size room and bathroom. The room is clean. Although we are on the 6th floor we can hear the noise from the street down below and on top of that we can also hear the noise which sounds like constant engineering work (elevator humming noise) in the morning to wake us up. The room is definitely NOT sound proof. There are only 2 elevators for 400 rooms hotel which is rediculous. Our room mate is very nice and friendly. There are generous choices for breakfast and waiting staffs are very attentive. I personally did not enjoy their coffee. It was too weak!

Room Tip: A room with the view of the castle. Stay away from the elevator area to avoid a wake up call from i...

We stayed for 4 nights. We had a 7th floor room at the rear of the hotel. Although the view was nothing special we had found it quiet at night and slept well. We had no problems at check in and received good service from thr hotel staff throughout our stay. We ate one night in the 2nd floor floor restaurant and had a good meal. Breakfast was also very good. We also found the hotel easy to find and a good base from which to explore the city.

We stayed 7 nights for a first visit to Lisbon in early March. The location is as convenient as possible for a touristic visit to the City: Most of the areas we visited were within a reasonable walk from the hotel and public transportation was no more than just outside the door (a major trolley car route), around the corner (bus and subway connections), or a five minute walk (train station for the ride to Sintra). The room was clean and pleasant. The breakfast buffet was excellent (see below). The room was just a bit too small to have a reading chair (the only seating were the bed and a desk chair). The location is safe but not fashionable (see below). Our room faced the main plaza fronting the hotel and we did hear traffic and street noise. but the noise was muffled and did not interefere with our sleep (see below). This is a large, tourist class hotel that caters to many groups and is consequently a bit impersonal. This is not a super-luxury hotel and is not the Ritz or Sheraton. The Mundial was an excellent value for what we paid (a discounted booking through Liberty Travel).

Some of the negative reviews cuased us some anxiety before our trip. I think these negative comments are generally incorrect or vastly over-stated:

Safety: We never felt unsafe. (We are two men in our 50's.) The hotel is around the corner from a major plaza and one of the busiest transit hubs in the city. The block or two between that plaza and the hotel are not fashionalbe but not dangerous. Much of those blocks comprise the hotel facade and shopping center. The other stores are tourist shops, small eateries (such as kabob houses) and small businesses. The hotel fronts on a large plaza (Motim Moniz) from which extends a large immigrant-ethnic neighborhood. We walked around some of those blocks during the day with no problem, but there is not much significant there of touristic interest. We would not have been comfortable walking those blocks at night, but there was never any reason to head in that direction.

Cleanliness: Our room and bathroom were completely clean. Now and then the wall sconces did flicker. That was the only issue in the room.

Noise: We had what was likely one of the noiser locations (on the fourth floor facing the plaza). We could hear the street noise. But it did not keep us awake or itnerefere with our stay. We do live in a city and are accustomed to such noises.

Staff: We found everyone--male and female--perfectly polite, friendly and helpful. We did not, however, ever have need to make any special request.

Breakfast: I don't understand the criticisms of the buffet. The buffet was very extensive and included cereals, milk (including soy), breads, pastries, cold cut meats, cheese, tomatoes and cucumbers, fresh fruit (strawberries, pineapple, papays, kiwis and grapes) and canned (peaches and mixed fruit salad); several kinds of breads, many pastries, saussages, and eggs (boiled and scrambled).

This hotel is ideally located for downtown Lisbon and is very handy for the Tram28 start point. It is close to a number of metro stops and buses.

A taxi to the hotel from the airport is around 8-12 euros depending on the number of passengers and items of luggage. In addition, there appears to be taxis waiting outside the hotel at all times which is very handy for the trip back to the airport.

It is deceptively large and was very busy when we went at the beginning of March. We only noticed this at breakfast as the hotel was quiet the rest of the time. The range of items available for breakfast is extensive and to suit all tastes although the hot breakfast items didn't look too appetising. Probably not quite up to four star standards when compared with others but we thought it was good value for money.

The hotel has a rooftop bar which provides great night time views over the city and a pretty spectacular view of the castle. Definitely worth a visit for an unwinding drink after a day spent sightseeing.

Did not quite live up to its four star rating but we had a good stay.
Bathroom was not as clean as we expected although the room was nice. Coffee and Pastries served in the lobby bar in the very early morning was an unexpected bonus and the buffet breakfast was decent, fresh with a good selection. Excellent location, close to some interesting monuments etc but tourists beware, the area was infested with pickpockets looking for an easy mark.

Room Tip: Ask for a room that looks up to the Castle at the back of the hotel. Good views especially at night...
