We stayed at the hotel in February, and had mixed feelings.

PROS:
1. Well located, near the Rossio
2. Excellent breakfast
3. Very clean

Cons:
1. Soundproofing could be better, as you hear street noises, plus midnight arguments in an adjacent room.
2. The older male front desk staff could use some customer service lessons. When asked to telephone the car rental agency (I always struggle with hotel phone systems in a new counrty), Mario declined, saying they were closed, but that I could telephone from the room, which I did. When asked for a nearby pharmacy open at 4 PM Saturday, he indicated there were none, but was corrected by a colleague.

Stayed here for 3 nights in February and having read mixed reviews on here i wasn't expecting anything amazing. Like others have said the taxi from the airport is quite cheap, 8EURs and doesn't take long at all. Check in was really disorganized, there was a group arriving at the same time and they were complaining that they had already waited 30mins for their keys. The reception staff were all over the place! Finally checked in and made our way to the room.

Room was on the fourth floor, nice view, a bit dated but clean. Walls are paper thing so you will hear everything during the night, voices in the next room, showers etc. Breakfast was ok, laid out a bit strangely and not the best selection...but was ok.

The day before we checked out the keys to our room stopped working so had to go back to reception to get them reactivated. Honestly the reception staff are pretty rude and have a lot to learn about customer service. On the last day, we noticed a ring was missing from the room....we have no proof it was stolen but it seemed to be the case. Check out was a lot quicker than check in at least. was asked twice if we had used the mini bar....found that a bit annoying.

All in all, the hotel is ok but wouldn't recommend it. Found the staff to be rude and a bit all over the place. Location is really what sells it but even at that the area is central but is very dodgy. There were constantly two police officers standing at the hotel entrance which makes you wonder!! We definitely as two girls didn't feel safe returning to the hotel at night, hassled about drugs even during the day and a lot of just dodgy characters and groups of men hanging around the area. Not sure if this is the case in all parts of the city. If returning I would certainly try a different hotel even if it wasn't so central.

Room Tip: Higher floor to avoid street noise.

I arrived to Hotel Mundial late Thursday evening. The male receptionist was not very friendly basically told to sign, given room keys and not even directed to the lifts. I did find the other staff members more helpful and service with a smile. Breakfast was good with large selection of typical European breakfast fare. Hotel is clean however the room was cold and noisy. This is not a 4 star hotel.

Tram 28 right outside is really convenient and especially convenient for the pickpockets to stand opposite the tram stop and select their victims. When boarding the train they tried robbing an older gentleman by using the old jumper over the arm trick. They were not successful so then tried robbing me... I was wise to what they were up to and he was not successful. We observed the same group of pickpockets day after day boarding the trams at various stops.

Another issue I had was constantly being offered hashish. While the hotel Mundial is in a really central location it is not the safest and I would consider another part of town.

February 3-5th 2012.
This is a great base for visiting all the sights in lisbon. This was a surprise weekend away for my girlfriend and was she surprised at what she called "enormous room".
Although reading reviews for the hotel before arriving, which were informative and ensured I was prepared for what to expect, we were pleased with the choice of hotel.
The staff were very helpful and acted very professional at all times, but yes the male staff coulsd of cracked a smile sometimes.Room was clean and well presented, but perhaps a little frade at the edges. Breakfast was plentiful and of a good standard, when we found it after getting lost in the maze of corridors. Location is fantastic to see all the sites and shopping... and dumping the bags back for the second round of shopping.
Overall we would recommend this hotel to anyone.

As nearly everyone commented on the bad bits of LISBON i thought i better as well. Lisbon is two different cities depending if it is night or day.
By day it is a busy active place with great shopping lots to visit and see. Food is great at most of the cafe's and restaurant's around town. Apart from the odd homeless person coming up to you begging for money, you are left alone to sit and soak up the atmosphere with a leisurely.
Found people in general very polite and welcoming. If traveling by tram, bus or metro, my suggestion is to wear coat with pockets inside and split money around your person or around a group. As mentioned in most reviews, pick pocketing in crowded/ confined spaces is common, especially on tourist looking people (I look typically English)

A must!!! try on a Tuesday or Saturday at 4.30 at Rossio square to go on the Gourmet tour (leaflet at tourist centre) cost £20 for 4 hour tour around Lisbon tasting local port's, cheese, marmalade, cherry brandy, custard tarts, beers and more. Paulo the guide is fountain of knowledge and brings you into his world where the unusual can be found behind an unusual door. Our tour lasted 5 hours and was non stop.

By night it is totally different. First suggestion do not walk around alone, try to pair up or go out in groups.
The homeless and other shade people stand in dark doorways and step out when you pass them and can make you very nervous. Streets are generally quite with not a sole around until 9pm-2am when apparently locals go out to socialise (passed by bed time). That said, I would recommend lisbon to anyone.
