I like the Villa Rica. Usually it is a great value Lisbon hotel, under 10€ in a cab from the airport and an easy metro ride from town (or walk it as i do).
It does however feel like you are watching the Eurozone crisis in action. Cost saving is evident everywhere. Little maintenance jobs not done. There is no longer a fitness room (when the hotel changed hands the previous owner took the equipment), the pool hours are shortening. The orange juice at breakfast now has so much water in it that I'm not sure it can be described as orange let alone juice.
Their prices havent increased any in 5 years, so maybe you are getting what you are paying (less) for, but it feels that either the new owners just have lower standards, or they are trying to save money wherever they can. Bad news is that sometimes attempts to save money become too obvious and you start seeing others every where you turn. Management should work on the little touches that make the place feel like you are getting great value, not that you are paying to line the pockets of the owners whilst they scrimp on everything.More
