We came to Portugal also in order to listen to some fado music. We chose ‘Clube do Fado’ because it’s famous for great fado musicians. I cannot say I’m disappointed, but the evening looked totally different from what I initially imagined.
The night we came the place was full and we weren’t let in. We booked a table for the next evening. When we came back the next day, we were warmly welcomed by a waiter and our coats were taken. We ordered some starters: delicious beans, olives, sausages and terrible bread (but I have a feeling bread is like that all over Portugal). Suddenly the light changed into red and 2 guitar players and a singer entered the room. They sat among us, performed 3 songs and left (in a hurry!). The waiter brought our main courses: a delicious duck, a decent steak and a very simple salad (later my friend said it was the most expensive chopped tomato in his life) and we continued eating. After half an hour the musicians returned with a different singer and performed another 3 songs. There were only 4 such performances, which was disappointing, because for me it’s definitely not enough. On the other hand, it’s really hard to eat while you listen to this music and breaks are absolutely necessary during an evening like that.
The food was good, wine was delicious (homemade) but it was highly overpriced!
After the last performance the waiters urged all the guests to finish their meals and leave and I didn’t like that, because nobody knew there will be no more, it wasn’t late and we wanted to sit for a while and chat.
I need to admit I liked the food and loved the music (it was even better than I expected) but I somehow feel bad about this evening. Like a trapped tourist. I’ll still recommend it, but if you decide to go there, it’s better to know what to expect.

I got there at 10:15 and the young woman at the door had ATTITUDE and told me the place was full and to come back at 11:00 for the next show or go somewhere else. So I went somewhere else. I am sure that they could have found a place for me on an off night in the off season. Even if they have the best Fado singers in Lisbon, it's not worth it to be given a brush off from a door person like that.

My goodness, if there ever was a tourist trap! Having read about the origins of fado music, and the beautiful cosy sphere that it evokes, my two friends and I were very excited about seeing fado at Clube de Fado. Upon arriving, we were ushered into the "second" fado restaurant, because we were told the other room was already full. The waiters seemed impatient, and were not at all friendly. The speed with which were directed the whole time gave a feel of a drive-in restaurant. A drive-in fado. Food was very overpriced, especially in relation to what we got. A salad is basically dry chopped carrot and cucumber, with a side serving of something that looked like pink mayonnaise. Anyway, all of sudden the lights were dimmed, 2 guitar players and a fado singer came out of nowhere. did three songs. the lights came on and they were gone. you are kind of left staring at your dry carrots and thinking "what did just happen?". half an hour later, also, equally abruptly the lights are dimmed again, three songs, and everyone is gone... and you know that they are rushing to the other room, to do the same act there... the whole thing had such a touristy feel to it... we were very disappointed and did not feel that we had the fado experience at all! Although, truth be told, the music was magical, the 5 mins it lasted, and you calmed your nerves about all the other disappointments of the place.

Apparently there are very few places that play traditional fado, especially rare in Lisbon now a days. Usually true fado is confined to private homes, family gatherings and so on. Maybe you will be at a cosy small restaurant in Lisbon, and if a fado singer walks in, feels like, you will enjoy a wonderful evening of fado... just like that. But you will not find what you are looking for in Clube de Fado

Club da Fado is situated in the old Amalfa area, close by the Cathedral of Lisbon. Mario Pacheco, man who owns the club and composes fado, plays mandolin in a trio that includes a bass fiddle and guitar. Three singers performed with passion - two beautiful young women, and middle aged singer. Dinner was decent, service very good and the whole atmosphere and performances are worth of visit. I would heartily recommend it to all sensitive on fado, this typically Portuguese music. ( April 7, 2010)
