We came to Portugal also in order to listen to some fado music. We chose ‘Clube do Fado’ because it’s famous for great fado musicians. I cannot say I’m disappointed, but the evening looked totally different from what I initially imagined.
The night we came the place was full and we weren’t let in. We booked a table for the next evening. When we came back the next day, we were warmly welcomed by a waiter and our coats were taken. We ordered some starters: delicious beans, olives, sausages and terrible bread (but I have a feeling bread is like that all over Portugal). Suddenly the light changed into red and 2 guitar players and a singer entered the room. They sat among us, performed 3 songs and left (in a hurry!). The waiter brought our main courses: a delicious duck, a decent steak and a very simple salad (later my friend said it was the most expensive chopped tomato in his life) and we continued eating. After half an hour the musicians returned with a different singer and performed another 3 songs. There were only 4 such performances, which was disappointing, because for me it’s definitely not enough. On the other hand, it’s really hard to eat while you listen to this music and breaks are absolutely necessary during an evening like that.
The food was good, wine was delicious (homemade) but it was highly overpriced!
After the last performance the waiters urged all the guests to finish their meals and leave and I didn’t like that, because nobody knew there will be no more, it wasn’t late and we wanted to sit for a while and chat.
I need to admit I liked the food and loved the music (it was even better than I expected) but I somehow feel bad about this evening. Like a trapped tourist. I’ll still recommend it, but if you decide to go there, it’s better to know what to expect.
