I have waited so long to visit the birthplace of St Anthony and I wasn't disappointed. A beautiful church, really beautiful.....quiet, serene and peaceful.
The little crypt which is accessed via some little winding stairs is truly incredible, visited by the Pope John Paul.
There is a tiny gift shop where you can purchase small items of religious interest/value.
Don't miss this beautiful church if you are visiting Lisbon.

That church is full of tranquility and there is something special in this city where Saint Anthony was born. The visit to the crypt is free and very moving.

Not publicised enough. So one could miss it on an initial visit like we did 9 years ago. Once there, believers will be very pleased to have visited.

For Catholic people this place is very significant. In a grotto we can visit and pray in the place where Saint Antony is supposed to be born.

Visited Lisbon shortly after the Santo Antonio festival that runs through June, with the climax I believe to take place on the 13th.
Being the patron saint of Lisbon, the saint is reverred by all devout citizens of the capital. Fiesta and local functions take place throughout the small lanes and alleys of the city.
