“Interesting History”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

It's church sits on the site of the home tHat the saint was born. Torn down and rebuilt over the same site. Very beautiful paintings and gilded walls and statues. Don't miss the side door to the CRIPT a must see room where he priest prepares for mass. The walls are covered with tiles and silver candelabras.

“A crazy feast!”
Reviewed September 25, 2012

St Antonio is a BIG street party! It is complete madness for one day, but the party lasts for many. In Alfama you can enjoy cheap and typical portuguese food, with Sardines beeing the bestseller.
However, be aware that this is crowded, and not for the unfit or very very young.

“Important Church”
Reviewed September 19, 2012

The original Church of Santo Antonio was destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. The new church was constructed by the architect Mateus Vicente in 1767. Newly married couples visit the church on their wedding day and leave flowers so that the saint will bring good luck to their marriage.
