Coming from the United States this memorial is iconic in the sense that it is used in so much tourist information when Lisbon is advertised. We were able to spend some time admiring the momument after a walking tour of Belem. It is very impressive and definitely did not disappoint. The entrance was closed when we visited but we were not disappointed as we were happy to see the monument from the plaza surrounding it.

We got off our open top bus to take a look at this monument. We didn’t pay to go inside and up to the top viewing platform, but we did walk around the outside and enjoyed the enormous sculptures commemorating all the famous explorers of Portugal.

This is Well worth getting close up to so you can see the size and scale of this enormous monument.

You will also see the world map in the paving just before this monument. That’s great to give you some more historical information about the explorers.

We stopped on our tour. A beautiful tribute to all that have sailed out of this harbor. Glad that we stopped

Entrance is cheap, and the view is nice but nothing more than that. Was not worth the money, nor waiting in line.

Portugal sure lives Henry the Navigator, as there is a statue of or monument dedicated to him in almost every city. This one is by far the most impressive in size. This is within walking distance of St. Jeronimo's church, too. Must see!!

The monument was built to commemorate the 5th centenary of the death of Prince Henry the Navigator the one who was responsible for the creation of a center/school where the navigators of the time exchanged their ideas and developed nautical instruments as well improved technically the ships. The monument is quite imposing following the architectural rules of the Salazar dictatorship. On the monument are represented all who played an important role in the Portuguese discoveries. Also worth seeing is the huge world’s map made in marble with the dates of the Portuguese discoveries. Enjoy!

The monument is on the water's edge overlooking the harbor. It's huge and magnificent! We did not go inside, but instead admired it from the outside. We read about it prior to stopping and it was more enjoyable. Without going inside an hour is plenty.

Gorgeous memorial site for the great maritime period of Portuguese history. It faces the sea, giant memorial site, we did not enter the site, just visit outside and took some pictures. A historic site worth a visit!
