We didn't pay to go inside, though it is huge and I'm sure the view is impressive. It's quite cool and the location is excellent and in walking distance of other nice places. Worth a look.

Had a look at this monument while in Belem and it looks good and with a good view of the 25th April bridge as well.
Think it is in need of a clean as starting to look jaded, put me in mind of something seen in old communist USSR.

We visited this monument after a tour of the Marine Museum and being very impressed with the fortitude of the early explorers in their relatively tiny ships. The monument is modern in design and well situated on a large square beside the River Tejo. The shape is reminiscent of the front of a galleon, with explorers gracing the figurehead. It was a sunny afternoon when we were there and people were out sailing on the river. The contrast of the recreational sail boats with the historic reality was very thought provoking.

The monument to the discoveries has been built to celebrate all the Portuguese explorers and their discoveries.
Coming to Belem district from Lisbon center by sea is suggested, as you can have a nice view of the monument.
Going inside costs only 3 euro and you get access to the top of the building where you can have a view of Belem district, while at the exhibition downstairs you can read about the Portuguese discoveries.

We went to Belém and started off with the Jerónimos Monastery (very beautiful, definitely worth a visit!!) and walking towards the ocean and the Discoveries Monument (Padrao dos Descobrimentos). The area around and beneath the monument are beautiful and relaxing, and the view from the top is magnificent! And it is okay pricewise as well, and you can gett cheap, cold water from the vending machine on the 1st floor (but the toilets are crappy!!!!!!). All-in-all: A must-see when travelling to Lisboa!
