“Great monument to a proud history”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

The Descobrimentos monument is a great tribute to a country with such an amazing history of discovery. The size is of the monument is impressive. Each side of the monument has all the famous discoverers Portugal had over the years through their history. It's located in the Belem area of Lisbon and stands at the edge of the Tagus river which is fitting considering all the discoveries Portugal made via ships from Lisbon. There is a viewing platform on the top of the monument for a fee of 3Euros and you can get an amazing view of Lisbon. Definitely worth a visit.

“Beautiful”
Reviewed September 29, 2013

The size is not reflected in pictures or postcards, its absolutely huge. Went here on part of tour so we only had 15 minutes to walk around, would like to have had a bit longer, but go inside and see the map and make sure you go to the front and side to really see the carving of the people in the stone. The water is so pretty, even though it was raining while we were there it is still worth the visit.

“YOUR chance to stand on the shoulders of historical giants!”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

Not as high as the Christo Rei, but:

It's easier to get to,

The entrance fee is cheaper,

There's less of a crush (at least when we were there),

And there's an excellent exhibition in the basement, with an English printed guide.

The view down on to the map of the world in the pavement below is pretty stunning as well, as are the views along the river front.

Really nice view of the Belem area and the new bridge!
Nice view on the mosterios de Jeronimos.
The 220 stairs are worth it! ;-)
The place in front of the monument and especially the map is worth a story!
