“Check it out but no need to go in and to the top”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 12, 2012

It's a concrete monument celebrating the explorers and navigators who departed from Lisbon. It's quite nice to look at it from the outside, and quite enjoyable to walk around it, have a look at the statues carved on its sides, and at the large world mosaic just underneath. But the ride to the top is not really worth the price as you get really nice views from many other places in Lisbon, for free.

“It's big!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012

The sheer scale of this is very impressive and well worth a stop if you’re seeing the other main sights of Belem such as the Torre de Belem and the Jeronimos monastery. We didn’t go up, as we’d been up the Torre de Belem and had some nice views so we didn’t really see the point. A wonderful monument to the intrepid adventurers that opened up the world 500 years ago.

“Much bigger than expected and the elevator to the top is worth it”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

By the pictures, I didn't expect the monument to be as big as it is. Its very impressive. The mosaics at the base of the monument are worth the 3 Euro ride to the top to see. There were large tour groups there but none of them went to the top. Understandable when you see how tiny the top is. Great views of the Monastery as well.

A monument to the grandiose past of a people that gave so much to the world 5 centuries ago. Great views over the river and the bridge.
