Located in Bairro Alto. Get the small train up, ( very difficult to climb on foot ). 3 minutes walk from the train stop. it is unbelievable to have all this amount of gold in one church. Do visit the attached museum, it is so informative.

We were about to miss it, but thankfully did not. the grandeur is something to see. Worth a visit when you are in the area. Loved it and got some great pictures.

Do not get it wrong and get inside when passing by this church. Nothing on the exterior austere architecture and fassade tells about its sumptuous and rich inside ornamentation and stoneworks.

Hispanic countries particularly favour ornate churches, heavy on or moulu, gilding, statuary and harrowing memorials… The Igreja de Sao Roque is a curious example, being at once austere and rococco: the exterior and the architecture itself as so simple as to be almost Calvinist, but in every niche, on every side altar, you will find the lush, ornate, rhapsodic high art of Catholicism. The paintings are of a very high standard, and the high altar is exceptionally fine. It marries a simple serenity with the baroque in a way that is very moving.

Over the top gold, jewels. Rivals the glitziest churches of Rome. If you are in Alto Barrio, definately worth a visit. Small but very impressive!
