It is an underrated museum. Close to Santa Apolonia, it is hidden from the rest of the city. It has an impressive collection historical artifacts.

Great collection in beautiful building. But only the signs in the (huge) selection of cannons is written in languages other than Portuguese. The rest is still interesting and impressive, but would be better with more languages available

This museum has something for everyone. The artifacts span centuries and are wonderfully preserved. Some of the rooms are stunningly decorated. One could easily spend two hours or more here. I am a history buff and was very pleased to find this treasure. The only disappointment was not being allowed to take pictures inside the building. I was able to take pictures in the courtyard which has the military history of Portugal in tile around the four walls and many cannon barrels. The museum is on the waterfront across from where the cruise ship was docked. A senior discount made it very affordable. One should be careful not to miss some of the rooms as the wrap around the inside of the building and there is a lower level.

If you are keen on history, you will enjoy spending 1 or 2 hours in this museum, located near Santa Apolonia train station. The collection is, obviously, mostly made on weaponry from centuries past - the collection of canons is remarkable. The building itself is beautiful and deserves a visit.

I leave here a few reccomendations for the management:
a) Post labels in EVERY item;
b) Post the labels in different languages;
c) Post the labels at a confortable height, so that an adult can read it without having to bend;
d) Write the labels in large font;
e) Include in the label an explanation of the purpose of every item - telling its name is sometimes not enough for the visitor to understand what the item is.
