Built to commemorate the city's reconstruction after the 1755 earthquake. It has six columns (some 11 m high) and is adorned with statues of various historical figures. Originally designed as a bell tower, the building ultimately transformed into elaborate arch within more than century-long delays. Next year will be cleaned and will be allowed to visit the upper part of the arch, looking forward to do it!

One of the Icons of the city, the Arco makes a great visit and one of the best spots for pictures of your visit to Lisbon. It is situated in the begining of Rua Augusta, a commerce street woth no cars, good shops and nice esplanades, that connects Praca do Comercio (with recent improvements, new restaurants and very nice esplanades) to Rossio, another great plaza in the city.
Great pics any time, the illumination in the night time is something special also.

Enjoy!

This is a beautiful view into the river. It is easy to find in the Rossio area. You can't miss it. Take a walk through to the park.

Everyday one can find lots of people taking pictures along Rua Augusta (one of the pedestrian streets), using "Arco Triunfal da Rua Augusta" as a frame for the equestrian statue (King Jose I) and the river. The arch itself is a monumental work of sculpture constructed to comemorate city's reconstruction of the heavy earthquake occurred in 1755. Its magnificence comes from cornice's height (30 m) above which stays the feminine figure of Glory (7 meters tall) rewarding Value and Genius

One of Lisbon landmarks, the Arch is very beautiful and from there you can visit Terreiro do Paço and walk near the river, or you can go to Rua Augusta and visit a lot of shops. There are also many restaurants and cafes nearby.
