Description: Located in Chiado, the Cantinho do Avillez restaurant welcomes you with a natural blend of the traditional and the modern. Quality is the priority with Chef Jose Avillez, and so nothing is left to chance. The cuisine, largely Portuguese inspired, is nevertheless influenced by travels abroad. The menu offers a wide choice of appetizers, "pregos" (steak sandwiches), entrees, main dishes and desserts, so that the gastronomic experience can be different at each visit. The service, which is pleasant and informal, contributes to the cheerful and relaxed climate.

“Nice Restaurant, Good Food & Service”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 30, 2013

Cantinho do Avillez was recommended to me by a foodie friend from Rome who had visited the restaurant last year. And I'm glad I took her recommendation. This was our first meal in Lisbon upon arriving after a long day of trans-Atlantic travel.

We had an 8:30pm reservation and were greeted warmly upon entering. Our server was extremely accommodating, and spoke excellent English, which we really appreciated!

We really enjoyed the server-recommended wine, which happened to be the chef's label and it went extremely well with our food choices. We had the tempura green beans and the "niza" cheese dish as starters. The cheese dish was the "top winner" for us in the starters category. The beans were ok, but the sauce that came with them was scrumptious! Our main dishes were a cod dish with egg and olives, it was good, but the other main was a scallop dish and that was extraordinary. We ended the meal with the best sorbet I've ever had, a lemon and basil flavored sorbet that was presented as large cubes in a tall glass. It was the perfect ending to our first meal in Lisbon

“Interesting and a bit funky”

The dishes here had a twist to update them from the traditional Portugese menu. Everything was well-prepared and tasty. Great wines by the glass. A small and somewhat casual place. Like it.

“The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 23, 2013

"Chef marketing" should be a hanging offence. The place was well hyped but the result after a meal: well, yes, hum, mmmm. Then you really decide, as you walk along the cobblestones outside the theatre next door that it was not exciting, not outstanding ..it is not great value (it is not expensive but it is overpriced). It was simply... underwhelming.
This is plain well done food presented in a town where there is very little different. The place looks like what a cool hip restaurant canteen style should look like. The service is a tad arrogant but it warms up. the food is pleasant, even fair. Not one of those meals you will remember, as you do the good, the bad and the ugly.

“Fair”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 18, 2013

Top marks for ambiance, the place had a buzzing, canteen atmosphere. I was expecting some imaginative flavoursome food, but it was sadly disappointing. Not bad, but not good either. Who would imagine chef Jose Avillez also runs the kitchen at the Michelin starred Belcanto. Considering the canteen style service and food it's too expensive.

“Enjoyed Dinner”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 11, 2013

Excellent spot to dine while in Lisboa, Cantinho has an interesting selection small plates, sandwiches and entrees, as well a nice selection of cocktails and wine. We started with the excellent green bean, and soft boiled egg appetizers, and had the steak sandwich and burger for dinner. The steak sandwich was well seasoned, thin and served on a tasty role. The burger was huge, juicy and delicious.

Reservations are a must, as they appear to take few walk-ins.
