“Excellent Value and Great Location”
Reviewed September 13, 2013

I just returned from staying at this 4 star hotel. I am confounded by some remarks. I am a perpetual complainer, and I expect value for money. I have written many reviews. This is the first hotel that I have only a positive impression about. Clean, comfortable, every facility, great location and on the whole excellent value. It is not a 5 star but then again, I dare say the rates will continue to be very reasonable. Staff friendly, accessible and accommodating. Rooms clean and comfortable. For the first time ever I experience no noise. When approaching staff for information/requests, they clearly couldn't do enough to please guests. If you find greater value for the money in Lisbon n a central location adjacent to the metro, I will eat my hat. Bes rest assured, this is a secure, reliable find and a very comfortable, quiet stay.

Room Tip: rooms at the back of the hotel are silent and many have lounges attached.

It's OK, but a bit far from the sightseeing area. It's close to the main Avenue of the city, but it's the other end of it. It's about 30 min walking to the actual downtown and all the other sightseeing areas.
Nevertheless it's in a nice area, connected to buses, subways etc and next to a very nice park.

Stayed for 8 nights at the Diplomatico. Booked in haste as a Lastminute.com secret hotel. The hotel is advertised as a 4 star, as the other reviews all say, it is no where near a 4 star hotel. In the early 80s it definitely would have been at the top of its game. The reception is reasonably impressive but clearly no money has been spent in the remaining areas of the hotel. We paid £18 per night each to stay here and personally for that money it was adequate, if we had booked earlier we would have found a nicer, more modern hotel for a similar price. If you are looking for luxury or a business class hotel this is not for you. For us it was somewhere to put our head down whilst we were at a festival and out drinking/exploring.

The Room,
Positives: Twin room, very big and split into two separate rooms with almost a lobby room then a bedroom with a bathroom in between. Their was also a balcony with a good view of the street. The room was clean and the beds were comfy.

Negatives: Safe costs €3 per day, The bathroom is very dated, 90s white tiles and a poor shower. The fridge didn't work and the tea/coffee facilities were terrible. The cleaners just make the bed and give the bathroom a quick spruce.

I wouldn't stay here again as I know that there are much nicer hotels for the same money. The staff are older Portuguese with less emphasis on great customer service but they are pleasant once you break down the barriers and get to know them a little.

I am not quote sure how this hotel got it's 4 stars, but it comes nowhere near, based on our 4 nights there in May.
The entrance and reception is light and cheerful, as were the front desk staff who we generally found helpful and courteous. Except they wanted to hold onto our passports "to fill in forms".....we insisted on sticking around until they were completed.
However, that is where and positives ended.
Our room on the first floor smelt damp and musty, the cupboards were broken and had holes punched through the dry walling. The room safe in the cupboard was without a key and on enquiring at reception, were told that the use of the safe would cost us an additional 3 euro a day!
The walls are paper thin and we were woken early by the plumbing sounds of our neighbour having a shower and flushing the toilet.
There were a few teabags in the room with a kettle and when I enquired about coffee, I was told they do not supply coffee facilities in the rooms, only tea. Really?
Breakfast was just horrible. On the third morning, tired of slushy scrambled eggs, tinned friut salad and raw pasteries, I asked for two fried eggs - please. The always sour and miserable dining room staff were horrified - it created a five minute screaming match in the kitchen, for the entire restaurant to hear, before I was brought 2 half-raw eggs, swimming around in a dish of oil. Seriously that a chef in a 4 star hotel kitchen can't cook a fried egg? You can but imagine the response when I enquired if toast was a possibility......
It is a long walk from the centre of the town nightlife and restaurants and really has nothing going for it.
Avoid at all costs.

Room Tip: Rooms in any hotel rather than this one, is my recommendation

The VIP Diplomatico hotel must have been superb in its days. However, those times are long gone, and the hotel has not been updated. The hotel claims to be 4 stars, and probably was at one point, but not any more. The interior is dark and a bit gloomy. The bellboy is almost as old and dusty as the hotel, but friendly and willing to help in any way he can.
But, the price is low and the location is pretty good. We booked it because it would be 'only' 0,3 kilometer from downtown. That turned out not to be true. The hotel is close to Marquis the Pombal metrostation, and it is still about 20 minute walk (downhill) to the real downtown of Lisbon. You can also hop on the metro (2 stops, metro is clean and easy enough) and be in the heart of Lisbon, so enough options to get there.
The room in the hotel was what we paid for. Old green carpet that needed to be replaced 10 years ago, a decent bed, a front area with a small hallway with door to the bathroom and a door to the bedroom. The walls are paper thin, so bring earplugs! During the week it was not very noisy, but in the weekend the hotel filled up a bit, and we could hear every word our neighbors said (tv, snoring, talking, everything). The room smelled like mold and dust and old stuff.
But, the hotel has free wifi (ask downstairs and they will give you the codes - you will need one code for every device).
Keep in mind that from the metrostation Marquis the Pombal, you will have to walk uphill for about 5 minutes to get to the hotel. So dragging a suitcase might not be easy. But if you want you can grab a taxi from the metrostation to the hotel.
For us, the hotel worked fine enough. We simply walked downtown and took the metro back up to the hotel. The walk to downtown is over the famous Avenida da Liberdade (Liberty Avenue), with fancy shops lining this 90 meters wide (1100 meters long) street and it will bring you straight to the square 'Restauradores', where downtown really begins (here is a trainstation, a metro station and a Starbucks).

I had a single room, which was small but not too small. The room was clean, the bathroom as well, and also the provided towels. Staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast offered standard choice (english & swedish breakfast). The free wifi functioned well. The hotel has a good location, not too far from downtown, and the road is often frequented by taxis so it does not take too much time to catch one. I would not claim that this is a four-star hotel but in my view it is a very solid choice and in a next visit to Lisbon I would definitely consider this hotel again.

this is no way a 4star hotel,as previously stated many times.3max.uphill from mar. de pombal metro,in the business district, with a couple of cafe/bars nearby.i asked for and got a smoking room on the9th floor,my room was a 'suite',i think.enormous!had no problems with cleanliness at all.room cleaner was excellent.at the weekend there appeared to be a staffing problem so that the receptionist was also the barman.i liked him too.all the staff seemed to be doing a good job with limited time.finally got the 'free' wifi working and my connection was good.breakfast for 8.5euro was also adequate and cheaper than the place round the corner.all in all for a 'touristic' 3nights to see lisbon, this hotel suited me fine.pricewise was the value option but with minimal facilities<no restaurant>.clientele were multinational, whoalso stayed but a few nights.20 minutes downhill stroll to town is an ideal trip for a 'city stroller' tourist like me so would recommend this for those who like a central,3star type experience.luxury elsewhere!
