“A destination hotel with charm”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2013

We stayed at two hotels in Lisbon because we wanted to start with something quiet and romantic and then end up in the loud and vibrant middle of the city. Our first hotel is an old 1800′s residential palace — Pestana Palace — brought back to life and in Belem a bit west of the center and near the river.

I was very happy with this pick and I do think it deserves its 5 star rating and with that I feel this is a great value. The room (first floor near the gardens) was fantastic and the room opened to a well kept and grown out garden. The pool area was very well done with a booth to order cocktails. The food was perfect. And breakfast sitting outside on the patio absolutely perfect with light jazz playing from speakers in the trees.

I now understand that Madonna stays (or stayed) at Pestana when she is in Lisbon. It is a bit off the path but we walked from there to the river front many days. Also i forgot to add that I thought the service was top notch. Anything we wanted.

There was a miscommunication at the hotel and on Friday night late there was no bike tour reservation for us. (All on them I swear… my Portuguese is superb albeit a bit more classical than you’ll find in the lower regions of the country and I admit to having trouble reciting with proper emotive inflection Elliot’s Four Quartets...) At 8am we get a call and it is all set up. There will be only three in the urban cycling tour — our guide and the two of us!

I say this story to say that the hotel staff went all out to fix a miss communication that in reality was probably my fault. To read more see http://dainehring.com

Room Tip: The rooms on the bottom floor (which I think is floor 10) near the pool offer a patio on the ground...

A better first class hotel than this, would be hard to find in Lisbon. The hotel is a converted palace, which retains its refined character with antiques in all the lounge rooms. The restaurant was very good if somewhat expensive. The gardens and pool were outstanding and a pleasure to walk and swim in. Our room was a superior garden room which made the experience more enjoyable. The staff in this hotel are very friendly and helpful and cannot do enough for you and enjoy their work here. I would recommend this hotel in Lisbon.

My daughter and I spent the last 5 days here at the Pestana Palace in Lisbon and all I can say is Wow! From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, we were made to feel welcomed, special and loved guests. The staff are all friendly and helpful, offering advise on where to go, what to eat and where to find the best shops. They were proud of the hotel and of their city and we enjoyed talking to them, and getting their advice. Our room was large and well appointed with lovely linens, towels, robes and soaps. The garden is beautiful, as is the main hotel building. You really felt like you were living in a palace! The swimming pools, spa and gym were all modern and very well equipped. Breakfast was a wonderful spread ranging from fresh fruit, yogurts, cereals, eggs, breads and juices. I felt I could have asked for anything and I would have gotten it! I cannot wait to return to this lovely hotel!

A beautiful hotel, with a beautiful garden where we stayed for three nights, but it was not the life changing experience one may expect...

Portuguese are really very nice, relaxed people. Modest, hospitable and genuine. In summer the Portugues coasts are like the French Riviera, but without the French maybe, and for half the money. In this hotel I first thought I did go to France. Not because of the many French speaking guests who were staying here, but because of the stress-level of the staff, who were anything but relaxed. In many ways it reminded me of most of the larger French hotels we stayed in the past, where staff is very professional but a bit detached and lacking warmth. Maybe it was the lack of warmth, the openess of the average Portuguese we missed most in this hotel. The staff were so eager to express how proud they were of the hotel, of its chique and splendor, that they seemed to forget to put the guest first. It gave us the feeling we were there for the hotel, instead of the other way around.

The quality of the hotel is excellent, as could be expected from a five star hotel. It just is not our hotel. We like to feel a little more at home.

A beautiful old hotel; Stayed in the new and renovated wing, which was fine-not great--but fine. The grounds are really beautiful and they have a nice swimming pool and spa. Food was crazy expensive though. The hotel is a bit out of the central area of Lisbon, but not too far and you can walk. I enjoyed this hotel and would recommend.

Fantastic hotel! We stayed 2 nights which was too short to enjoy all the facilities of the hotel since it was the first time that we visited Lisbon where there is so much to see. The interior of the main building is fantastic, the rooms in the other parts of the hotel are nice and clean.
Very professional staff being used to please royalties, famous and business people and pop stars.
A fantastic breakfast with all you can dream! We didn't had the time to enjoy dinner at the hotel so we can't rate it.
A nice and quiet terrace to enjoy a last drink in the evening after a busy day.

Just finished a 2 week holidays trough Spain and Portugal, staying at 5 of the top hotels.
The Pestana Palace was my favorite.
Large, well appointed grounds, beautiful room ( asked for a view to the garden).
The interior of the Palace is awesome, they even have a chapel.
The restaurant is exceptional. A big thank you to Nuno, he was genuinely friendly and helpful. Staying at this hotel and not eating would be a mistake.

Reception staff were beyond brilliant, we even made a booking error which they corrected with-in minutes. The welcome was very warm and perfect. ALL contribute to our stay being a wonderfull experience. I have to make however a point of how good is Luiza, Rui, Antonio, Petro and Joaquim.

I will get back to this hotel!

Room Tip: Ask for a garden view room.
